The second chapter describes basic rhetorical principles, specifically found in Augustine's De Doctrina Christiana, showing how the character of the preacher makes preaching credible.  The third chapter proposes three conversations that take place in the preaching act:  the preparatory conversation, the homiletic conversation, and the reflective conversation.  The fourth chapter describes the program that I developed in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati for the preparation of deacons who preach. The project summarizes and analyzes official documents issued in 1963-1994, and then presents principles, patterns, and behaviors of human communication. From this research the project derives a taxonomy of preaching abilities undergirded by Alverno College's approach to assessment, including a sophisticated listener-response instrument. The model presumes a basic course in preaching offered through the seminary.  Five students preached five times in their pastoral settings, and worked with a group of laity and pastors/supervisors to prepare and to critique their preaching.  The primary finding indicates that the method works well if done correctly. Students can learn preaching skills effectively through direct contact with parishioners and supervisors in a real preaching experience.  The lay people benefit also by learning about Scripture, preaching, and the coming Sunday celebration. Karl Rahner contributed significantly to the developing theology of the word reflected in the Vatican II documents and continues to exert his influence.  He highlights liturgical preaching as a significant ministry of the ordained priest.  Developed in this theological framework, the preaching course design employs the principles of andragogy developed by Malcolm Knowles. It provides background for the present situation, reports the findings of the empirical study, holds the data up for reflection and confronts it with pertinent ecclesial questions. This study measured how effectively the preaching experience connects with the faith needs of the members in a large congregation of over 11,000 members. Immediately after the preaching experience on the eight Sundays in this study over the course of three years, the entire congregation was invited to respond on an instrument which elicited statistical data on what the congregation member heard in the sermon and how the sermon touched his/her life that day. A third open-ended question followed: Why did the sermon touch your life? Averages of 1,400 evaluation forms were statistically calculated on each occasion. 89-93% of the entire congregation indicated that the sermon connected with their faith needs. With the effective use of high-context communication style the preacher in this congregation has moved from outsider to insider in this large congregation naming the grace of the members living a faith-filled life.
