This project explores the effect of introducing the Celtic understanding of God's presence in the world on the religious and prayer practices of college students.  A small group of students met weekly to discuss articles on Celtic spirituality and to review prayers from the Celtic tradition.  A pre- and posttest design with no comparison group measured changes in their perception of the presence of God in their lives. They also recorded daily responses to two questions: How have I experienced the presence of God today? and How have I reacted to the presence of God today?  These responses were coded using categories suggested by perceived manifestations of God's presence in a person's life: connectedness with God, others, and creation; right relationships; a greater sense of the greatness of God; occurrence of private prayer and corporate worship; acceptance of self and one's gifts; a sense of being led or called; freedom and peace in the midst of crisis or calamity; sacrifice and power in daily life; and, other categories that emerged from the data. This study suggests that the participants experienced the truth communicated in Scripture that God is present in our world and that God's presence is something that can be experienced in a variety of ways and places, chiefly through a sense of connectedness with other persons rather than directly to God or to creation.  Furthermore it suggests that being exposed to a different view of God's presence can increase a person's sensitivity to that presence.  Participants expressed an appreciation for the Celtic integration of the Christian faith into all aspects of their lives and came to see the reality that all that we do is prayer.  However, this awareness did not substantially affect the time and manner in which the participants prayed to God."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134249379692544,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:32:10.869Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:11:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:55:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"768d8c96-ee8c-410d-a010-99bb26fa2741","accessControl_ssim":["a0d620c2-348d-4b4e-8da6-a9eba5f28aa7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Parish leadership in transition: exploring models of partnership, inclusivity and collaboration"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:11:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:37:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["aa22eb5c-145d-41b6-8c01-b43d4b781fe2"],"hasLease_ssim":["27a5b862-7591-4824-8690-ab09df4cfda6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Mary E Moore"],"year_tesim":["2000"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Edith C Prendergast"],"keyword_tesim":["Feminist theology"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Catholic Church","Celtic Church","Leadership","Partnership--Religious aspects--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The writer proposes that more inclusive, effective parish leadership models can be developed by re-imagining the parish through the lens of a Celtic and feminist world view, and by reinterpreting Spirit and Power from a feminist perspective.  The project explored this thesis by initiating a congregational study focusing on one parish.  The research included observations, on-site visits and interviews.  A literature review on Celtic spirituality, feminist theology and organizational leadership was completed.  Integrative analysis was done and foundational values and components for future leadership models were proposed.  Transformational leadership, spiritual renewal, and communication of vision are essential to success in implementing new models of parish leadership. A congregational study was initiated, focusing on one parish as a revealing text.  The research included on-site visits and interviews. The wisdom gleaned from the congregational study was then women with a review of literature on Celtic spirituality, feminist theology and organizational leadership.  An integrative analysis of the combined research was done; foundational values and components for future leadership models were proposed. The research surfaced many important findings and conclusions. Among these are: 1) they key to leadership is relationship and not skill development, structure or power; 2) in opposition to dualistic, hierarchical world-views, feminist theology and Celtic spirituality stress interconnectedness and inclusivity which are fundamental to the development of future leadership models; 3) both hierarchical and charismatic elements of the Catholic Church must be honored and balanced; 4) intentional processes are needed to enable the transition from hierarchical models of leadership to more inclusive ones, especially processes for and integrating feminist and Celtic values and; 5) the church needs to give priority to including the wealthy, poor, old and young, as well as persons of many cultures and both genders, in the community's circles of relationship and involvement. The study concludes that several steps and strategies are essential to successfully implementing new models and paradigms of leadership.  In particular, transformational  leadership, spiritual renewal, and processes to communicate the vision across parishes, deaneries and Archdiocesan entities, are essential for gaining commitment from the faith."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131971335749632,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:55:58.357Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":4,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Barry R Ballard","hits":1,"label":"Barry R Ballard"},{"value":"Edith C Prendergast","hits":1,"label":"Edith C Prendergast"},{"value":"Timothy Hale Cumings","hits":1,"label":"Timothy Hale Cumings"},{"value":"William S Parks","hits":1,"label":"William S Parks"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Church and community","hits":1,"label":"Church and community"},{"value":"Feminist theology","hits":1,"label":"Feminist theology"},{"value":"Worldview","hits":1,"label":"Worldview"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Celtic Church","hits":4,"label":"Celtic Church"},{"value":"Catholic Church","hits":2,"label":"Catholic Church"},{"value":"Spiritual life--Christianity","hits":2,"label":"Spiritual life--Christianity"},{"value":"Christian life","hits":1,"label":"Christian life"},{"value":"Evangelistic work","hits":1,"label":"Evangelistic work"},{"value":"Leadership","hits":1,"label":"Leadership"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[{"value":"Ireland","hits":1,"label":"Ireland"}],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":4,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Asbury Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Asbury Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Claremont School of Theology","hits":1,"label":"Claremont School of Theology"},{"value":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Trinity Evangelical Divinity School","hits":1,"label":"Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":4,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2000","hits":1,"label":"2000"},{"value":"2002","hits":1,"label":"2002"},{"value":"2009","hits":1,"label":"2009"},{"value":"2011","hits":1,"label":"2011"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Asbury Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Asbury Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Claremont School of Theology","hits":1,"label":"Claremont School of Theology"},{"value":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Trinity Evangelical Divinity School","hits":1,"label":"Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":4,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Asbury Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Asbury Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Claremont School of Theology","hits":1,"label":"Claremont School of Theology"},{"value":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Trinity Evangelical Divinity School","hits":1,"label":"Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":4,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":4,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
