This project developed the first part of a Chaplain's Academy that focuses on the 'Foundations of Law Enforcement Chaplaincy.' The project focus and scope were to plan, develop and lead the first four curriculum sessions of the Chaplain's Academy - Foundations of Law Enforcement Chaplaincy - and include the following elements: 1) The Law Enforcement Family, 2) Legal Liability/Confidentiality/Privileged Information, 3) Sensitivity and Diversity, 4) Ethics. The project concentrates on a police chaplain's pastoral care of officers who experience an intense grief reaction because of their own fear of death, the close bond between officers, and the public nature of the whole process.  Grief in general, sudden violent death grief, Critical Incident Trauma, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder are discussed. In addition to several years service as a volunteer chaplain, the author completed the Missouri basic law enforcement class and was accepted as a member of the International Conference of Police Chaplains, and endorsed by the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. His experiences in developing and writing programs for small towns, cities and state police provide background for the study.  Principles and practices from a decade of full-time chaplaincy form the foundation for the reorganization of that program used as the model in this study.  Reviewing aspects of policing in a community to describe the arena of ministry, the author shows how police chaplaincy is an outreach ministry of the local parish.  He illustrates how this ministry functions both to and through police
