It is based on interviews of six women and two men, aged 30 to 50, who are survivors of childhood abuse. This study indicates that beliefs which are most conducive to recovery are those that affirm the survivor's own goodness and power. In terms of God image, the most significant shift was from an external God-person to an internal God-experience. Several religious themes were examined including: suffering, free will, evil and forgiveness. Those beliefs which affirmed freedom of choice and responsibility were most helpful to recovery."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133132309659648,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:14:25.548Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:40:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:45:36Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8006cc02-0060-448f-8cd9-2e18b10698f9","accessControl_ssim":["176ba7b2-da0c-455a-b597-a471034fac3c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The meeting of abused children at the counseling well"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:40:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:54:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["64931e15-fbc7-4792-b209-52fd9f5f3ca4"],"hasLease_ssim":["29d7e038-a55a-4178-9bd9-e0f7329a7092"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Christian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Brian W Grant"],"year_tesim":["1990"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kevin Van Chapman"],"publisher_tesim":["Christian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bible. The author analyzes this therapeutic situation by utilizing the resources of material on child abuse, the resulting pain of being abused as a child, theology, psychotherapy, and the story of Jesus meeting the woman at the well in the Gospel of John 4:7-21. The author determines that a pastoral counselor must address and be in the process of working through his or her past abusive experiences before counseling with counselees who have also been abused as children. The author creatively uses the images of a counseling well, water, houses, and abandoned fireplaces to bring the pain and the journey of recovery alive in this pastoral counseling setting.
