The author studied the role and qualifications of the office of bishop/presbyter explicated in First Timothy, and in the early vision of the founders of the Stone/Campbell movement. Based on that research, he argues that the role of the elder is to live a life worthy of being imitated and to be capable of articulating the faith embodied by that life. Disciples episcope began in the office of 'evangelist' in the early decades of the movement, grew through the de facto assumption of episcope by the corresponding secretaries of the movement's 'state missionary societies,' and received constitutional status in the office of Regional Minister, created in the denomination's Restructure in 1969. Using video observation and participant interviews, this study explores the impact of leadership, a formational method of Bible study, the interlacing power of stories, prayer, conversation, and silence, in order to determine the efficacy of this small group model.
