Five members of a small group (Growth Group) in a local church has been interviewed about their experiences after one year of participation of the group. This actual group has also been compared with two other small group models: recovery groups and covenant discipleship groups. The methodology included a pretest, a packet of learning activities for the purpose of pre-workshop preparation, a workshop, the post-test and the use of the Delta Model for future action planning and transfer of learning. The focus group for the study were ministerial preparation students at Faithful Central from diverse denominational backgrounds. Thirty students attended two-hour sessions for ten weeks. Qualitative data analysis instruments evaluated the results of the study. Some of the clergy and all the laity that participated had been on a 'Walk to Emmaus.' The study proved that there was a positive effect on the United Methodist congregations. Believing that educational and experiential tools can enhance persons' learning and thereby assist in the changing of their attitudes and behaviors, eighteen volunteers were given a series of study materials and activities, and observed and interviewed to note the impact of this work on them.  As the volunteers studied the resource, They Walked in the Spirit through reading it and using a study guide in weekly group discussion, worked on questionnaires, completed homework assignments, and evaluated their experience, they noted that they were reminded of the essential nature of an integrated Christian life. Because of the logistical challenges of writing a totally original curriculum, a writing team was established to produce a series of lessons by editing and rewriting existing material published by Urban Ministries, Inc. This process resulted in an effective partnership producing a curriculum which was culturally sensitive and committed to excellence.
