Four research questions guided this study: How did the study of systematic theology impact 1) the participants' thinking, 2) the participants' actions, 3) the participants' affections, and finally 4) what about systematic theology uniquely contributes to their spiritual formation? The data was analyzed using the constant comparative method. The study is based on qualitative research that included in-depth interviews with nine ministers in the Washington, DC area. It is supported by literature reviews related to transformational learning theory, a biblical case study from the life of Simon Peter, and findings from research that relate to pastoral ministry. Analysis revealed areas in which the ministers' understanding coincided with this theory. It also revealed gaps in their knowledge. The research, following a literature review, engaged qualitative methodology through personal interviews guided by four research questions. These questions explored the participants' beliefs about inerrancy, their approaches to difficult texts, their methods of interpretation which were largely individualistic, and their reliance upon God's guidance in understanding texts. The survey was conducted before and after the training program among 30 new church members and 30 lay leaders. Pastors were to select a group of men from their churches to participate in leadership development through a mentoring process that would cultivate a disciple relationship and develop their skills in a ministry setting under the tutelage of a mentor coach. The project was a success. The ministry project will involve three phases. First, the project director will identify best practices in biblical servant leadership through research, exploring pertinent doctrines, biblical themes, as well as input from experts. Secondly, the project director will craft selected content into training sessions. The training sessions will function as a pilot program fro required leadership development at FBCGS. Each session will be designed to address head (cognitive), heart (affective), and hands (psychomotor), presenting opportunities in each learning style.
