The project director trained the participants during four instructional sessions on a Saturday. The project director also distributed additional materials for personal application. The first session of the workshop included instructing the selected members on the reason for a greeter ministry. The project director discussed biblical foundations and resources for a greeter ministry. Session two of the workshop focused on the responsibilities of the selected members for an effective greeter ministry. In the third session of the workshop, the group evaluated the comments from a 'secret worshipper' and developed a plan to enhance a guest's experience. Role-playing was utilized in the third session for the purpose of training the group. The author believes that the term 'revival' has been misunderstood in view of the biblical meaning and needs to be redefined for the modern church. We can be renewed by focusing on the fact that God has sent us a Savior and being Christ's body here on earth. Churches can turn this concept into an action plan for their congregation by instituting a program that honors Christ's methods of discipling and the activities of the historical revivalists, appealing to the whole person: head, heart, and hands. John Wesley's class meeting system was successful because it focused on these elements. The Navigators are a modern-day example. Creating sermon-based small groups to reinforce sermons enhances biblical discipleship and produces life change. Such groups help people grow spiritually in a complex world that communicates many ideas. Chapter one raises the possibility that resurfacing the sermon's main idea and desired application in a discussion group can extend the purpose of the sermon. Chapter two provides a theological foundation for the role of the pastor as preacher and the use of small groups. Chapter three provides analysis from ten churches interviewed to discover reasons why sermon-based small groups work, providing a best practices list, specific challenges and how to overcome them, and principles for writing curriculum. The study design consisted of an independent assessment of observed leadership behaviors before and after implementation of the training program. Ten lay leaders from Mebane Presbyterian Church in Mebane, North Carolina were evaluated by peers and followers using the Mind Garden online multifactor leadership questionnaire (MLQ 5X). The study participants underwent an intervention using biblical materials and action steps from Bass and Avolio's Leader's Notebook. A group of six assessors were asked to evaluate the manual using the Likert Scale. Their responses determined the outcome of the project's eight goals. The results indicated that the manual was clear to understand and biblically accurate. It did, however, fail to meet the goals of effectively communicating the process of establishing missional worship experiences. The author used two of the Group Curriculum chapters for each of the group sessions. The most significant impact was on forgiveness of others, praying for self and praying for others. The project goals were evaluated using a Likert scale and qualitative measurements. The assessment tool contained open and closed-ended questions. A panel of experts served a evaluators for the eight week Forgiveness curriculum. Therefore, this project tested the effectiveness of a church-based program created to convince Christian adults that the gospel is for them, bring clarity to their definition of the gospel, and teach them how the gospel functions to make them more like Christ. The program consisted of sermons, small group discussion and daily devotional reading.
