The thesis-project proposes a biblical theology of a royal priesthood as the best way to understand the formative community of the people of God. The moral theology section ofthe thesis-project argues that this royal priesthood is best shaped and formed in the virtue ethics tradition for most effective engagement with ethical issues in the workplace. In addition, lay business professionals offer their insights on the effectiveness and the improvement of formation in the church through field research that includes qualitative interviews and surveys. Finally, thethesis-project discusses the implications for congregational ministry based on the biblical theology of a royal priesthood, moral theology focused on virtue ethics, and field work observations. People from both realms frequently align Christianity with a deontological system of ethics. However, such a system of duty ethics often leads to a self-righteous legalism both groups would oppose. The locus of scripture is not to teach believers to do, but rather to become and the doing will follow. The paper interacts with the teachings of Aristotle, Augustine and Aquinas to establish both an historical and theological basis for virtue ethics. The church departed her normal practice of virtue theory and replaced it with deontology. It is time for the church to recover the biblical system of virtue ethics. Deontology is not set aside, but used as a guide for assessing the virtues required. Believers must especially cultivate the virtues of faith, hope and love in order to recover the reputation of the Church as a holy and reliable institution that can point the world to the One True God. When congregants aspire to become virtuous Christians, then the church will be able to recover her identity as the holy institution of God in the eyes of the world. Preaching, teaching and mentoring must lead believers to understand what they must become, and then what they do will be the fruit of that being."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132995676012544,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:12:15.243Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:39:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:32:45Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"701d2200-e19e-4b5f-b752-25ef9e0896ef","accessControl_ssim":["3859726f-73a4-4368-8c8c-3dcee16a486e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Crucible of Orthodoxy and Orthopraxy: Examining the Intersections of Social Justice, Moral Development and Theology"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:39:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:25:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c3935627-9420-41e6-b84e-7097778bbe9d"],"hasLease_ssim":["d0b8f7f8-1807-4d95-894d-e7166dc584c6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Bethel University"],"advisor_tesim":["Timothy Senapatiratne"],"year_tesim":["2017"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Eydie Ann Dyke-Shypulski"],"publisher_tesim":["Bethel University"],"subject_tesim":["Faith","Social justice","Christian ethics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["An apparent disconnect exists regarding how people of faith apply personal morals and theological perspectives when positioning themselves with regard to public policy and social justice issues. However, responses indicate that the resolution for addressing these challenges should be shaped by Christian values and ethics as defined by her Christ-identity."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Ashland Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["beb93775-0b27-4cc6-9fb0-f2ad62e68517"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130658578366464,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:35:06.413Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:45:52Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:08:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"82a56e8f-17f0-428c-8389-3d8a7fe476bd","accessControl_ssim":["4783c736-0dcc-4173-a902-3b254a6a82a7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Sanctification and our inner dialogue: the application of scripture to our self-talk"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:45:52Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:59:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6ff47ace-eacf-4986-b7ba-5a38fe8e05ca"],"hasLease_ssim":["139580e2-ef85-4619-b4d9-4d4d03341e96"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["David L Larsen"],"year_tesim":["2014"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Paul S Hawkes"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Interior monologue","Christian ethics","Preaching","Sanctification"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project investigated the importance of the sanctification of our inner dialogue referred to as self-talk. Specific questions sought to ascertain the influence of Micah 6:8 in one's personal faith, civic understanding, and personal relationships. The purpose of the project is to explore how scripture passages become integrated into the life of persons beyond their involvement in a particular organizational context; in other words, how scriptural passages move from theory to practical application in everyday living.
