W","Christian leadership","Clergy","Influence (Literary, artistic, etc.)","Church of England"],"abstract_tesim":["        The purpose of this study was to explore how ministry leaders at All Souls Church, Langham Place, and other adjacent organizations, experienced the leadership of John R. W. Stott. This study sought insight, wisdom, and best practices from Stott’s faithful life and ministry. The research used the basic qualitative case study method. Seven individuals who served with Stott at various points throughout his over sixty years of ministry leadership were interviewed. The study reviewed three distinct areas of relevant literature: (1) a biblical framework for ministry leadership through the lens of the Apostle Paul in 1 \u0026 2 Timothy and Titus, (2) succession planning from long-term pastorates, and (3) core ministry practices of leader development in churches. The study revealed that Stott's leadership was characterized by a robust commitment to biblical truth, a remarkable focus on long-term leadership development, and an intuitive approach to succession planning. Participants highlighted Stott's personal humility, incisive mind, and discipline. His leadership disposition of “gentle seriousness” cultivated healthy institutions, mission-oriented teams, and the development of resilient leaders. The study found three key themes from the tenure of Stott: (1) a posture of “gentle seriousness,” (2) a life of discipline and delight, and (3) a long view of leadership development. The problem this study addresses is the broad scale disaffiliation and consequent decline of the Christian church in the U.S., especially among younger generational cohorts.\r\n\r\nThis study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with six ENLs from diverse parts of the U.S., in large metropolitan regions, representing different denominational traditions. The interviews focused on gaining data with three main research questions: how do ENLs describe their role within an ecclesiastical network? How do ENLs equip pastors to lead transgenerational churches that are reaching dechurched and unchurched people? How do ENLs describe the mission of the local church? In addition, ENLs were asked how they equip pastors with knowledge of: current culture, generational thinking, epistemology, and Christology. \r\n\r\nThe literature review focused on four key areas that provided relevant and foundational knowledge to understand the context and critical work of ENLs. The four areas were: the enmeshment of generational theory and culture, the contours of a secular age, the apologetic appeal of covenant epistemology, and missional ecclesiology. \r\n\r\nThis study concluded that causes leading to mass generational disaffiliation is a complex amalgamation of: the dynamics of an increasingly secularized culture, the church’s loss of missional identity resulting in loss of respectability and relevance among younger generational cohorts, and the fragilization of the Christian faith through a myriad of factors. To address these challenges this study identified commitments and practices of ENLs that address the crisis of disaffiliation. These commitments and practices involved the church’s recovery of its missional identity marked by the following characteristics: a renewed eschatological vision for shalom, holistic ministry addressing the needs of dechurched and unchurched people, the functional unity of the church in a geographic region, and missional contextualization of gospel proclamation and ministry. The study revealed the role of ENLs as instrumental in effectively addressing the crisis of disaffiliation, and the church in decline, through the establishment of citywide networks of missional churches. The church does not often intentionally address the cultural difficulties of obeying the command to love one’s neighbor or prioritize the unity of the church the way Jesus does. The divisions within the church reflect the rising polarity of American society along cultural and political lines rather than a beautiful contrasting vision to it that brings glory to God. \r\n\r\nThis study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with nine discipleship leaders who intentionally incorporated cultural intelligence as an aspect of discipleship in their local monocultural church. The interviews focused on gaining data with four research questions: what motivates these leaders to incorporate cultural intelligence in discipleship, what challenges do they face doing it, what methods do they use, and what benefits do they find for the individual, church, and community. \r\n\r\nThe literature review focused on three key areas for incorporating cultural intelligence into discipleship: a biblical framework for cultural diversity within the church, business best practices for developing cultural intelligence, and the experience of multiethnic churches.\r\n\r\nGrowing in cultural intelligence is a process that requires people to interact with cultural difference to the point of dissonance. People resist this discomfort by retreating. Leaders play key roles by reiterating the rich gospel motivations for perseverance in the difficulties, helping people process their own emotions and resistance, and calling them to the goals of engagement with others with compassion and respect. The nature of entrepreneurship affects many aspects of the church planting endeavor. It affects the needed personality traits of the church planter, the nature of a church planting opportunity, the model of church planting, and the relationship between church planters and their calling organizations, and even the conflicts that can occur in those relationships. The current literature does not address the nature of entrepreneurship in church planting. Church planters and their calling organizations that do not account for the nature of entrepreneurship risk the health of the church planting venture. \r\n\r\nThis study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with church planters and the leaders of their calling organization in three different church planting situations. The current literature was reviewed in the areas of entrepreneurship and church planting. Also, original research was conducted through personal interviews with three church planting situations, both with the planter and the leader of the calling organization. The literature review and interview analysis focused on three key areas: the entrepreneurial traits of church planters, the available models for church planting as they relate to entrepreneurship, and the entrepreneurial aspects of the relationship between church planters and their calling organizations. \r\n\r\nThis study concluded that there is a continuum of degrees of entrepreneurship for the church planting endeavor. This continuum speaks to the personality traits involved in how church planters choose a church planting situation and how calling organizations choose a church planter, it speaks to the choice of a church planting model, and it speaks to the structure of the relationship between church planters and their calling organization, as well as conflicts that can occur in the relationship. It shows that more people can plant a church than think they can plant a church. Churches face significant challenges when senior pastors retire or transition without succession plans.\r\n\r\nThis study concluded that there are ten significant findings and ten actions that can reduce congregational anxiety and enhance the organizational continuity during a succession. The study found that congregations should be understood as emotional systems and that senior pastor transitions cause organizational anxiety. Self-differentiated leaders are essential to a healthy succession planning process, due to the emotional nature of the congregation. Succession plans that create organizational continuity must be aligned with a church’s mission, vision, and values.\r\n\r\nThe most important person in the succession planning process is the transitioning senior pastor. Senior pastors who remove significant barriers for their successor’s benefit have more succession success than those that do not. Contrary to popular belief, differentiated senior pastors can remain on staff after their transition in a reduced role. The longer the tenure of the transitioning senior pastor, the longer the succession planning process ought to be.\r\n\r\nTen hiring practices were recommended to alleviate the challenge of finding and hiring a successor: hire a culture fit, hire and develop an internal candidate, hire a young generalist, hire a successor years before their transition, and hire a succession consultant. It is quite disheartening that some church leaders no longer show integrity and accountability. Church leaders fail in their responsibilities to others in the church because most of them are not conscious of the fact that they can be tempted to misuse authority. The shepherding of the church is in the hands of the Bishops, Pastors, Teachers, Evangelists, Elders, etc. Yet, this is not an excuse to abuse the influence granted to them by exploiting people, misdirecting and misapplying the resources at their disposal. Promotion from one position to another in the church is not to make leaders forgetful of the fact that they are called to represent Christ, the Chief Shepherd, and Bridegroom of the church, as stewards.\r\nSome leaders are fine Christians until they are selected to positions of leadership. Once the position is gained, they start teaching the people in demeaning and derogatory ways and sometimes making excessive demands on the people as well as showing some levels of dishonesty and non-accountability. Also, church leaders fail in their bids to discharge their responsibilities acceptably. Besides ignorance, they can be tempted to abuse their authority. The truth is that the role of Bishops, Pastors, Evangelists and other church leaders are not given so that they might hold down the people and have them serve the leader’s needs and wants, but rather that they, the leaders, equip and elevate those they lead to serve Jesus and change the world. We have the example of Jesus’ leadership who came to serve and not to be served.\r\nWhen church leaders understand that the authority God has given them is not for themselves, but for all sorts and conditions of people placed under them, then the virtue of integrity and accountability will be strengthened. Church leaders are exposed to the temptation to profit because of their privileges. When church leaders decide to profit from the privilege of leadership, it gives people reason to question their motives. That notwithstanding, Pastors can be appreciated with godly generosity by the members of the church. With devotional exercises done to curb or reduce the prevalent level of lack of integrity and accountability not only in the Lutheran Church of Nigeria but also in other churches as well, leaders who are still involved in wielding authority selfishly — the exact opposite of practicing faith in Christ Jesus, are sure to mend their ways.
