As understood and practiced in the local church evangelism is in critical condition.  Evangelism is an unfriendly word.  Leadership's challenge is to discover and implement a fresh approach.  Bethany Church, located in growing southern New Hampshire, developed a strategy stressing disciple-making rather than decision-making. Using community assessment and a congregational survey, Bethany created a paradigm to reclaim the evangelistic enterprise by: expanding the vision; equipping the people; targeting the audience; and incorporating the newcomer. The project included a face-to-face interview with most members of the congregation to obtain member responses concerning their own Christian participation and needs, together with their views of the life of the congregation and work of its leadership.  All of this was compared with the results of a major biblical study about the church. There is a need to hold these various component parts together instead of choosing one or the other as real or ultimate.  The holding together of these different spheres can be accomplished within a tension.  The development of a construct, diagram, or visual interpretation of this process presents an opportunity to explore the symbols of our church and the traditional Christian approaches to life's issues.  The process of exploration is far more important than the finished construct, for the construct is only a tool to enable and enhance theological reflection and formation within a parish. The basic material of this course was the life and teachings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, especially his emphasis on christological understanding. This project was conducted during an eight-week, two-hour seminar in the local church setting.  The class method involved lectures followed by suggested discussion questions and a final evaluation. This doctrinal background was reflected in the social and political action which characterized John Wesley and the Wesleyan movement of the eighteenth century. The author researched Wesley's sermons, diary, letters and treatises, and read several textbooks on liberation theology, to discover similarities and contrasts. Statistical analysis failed to confirm the hypothesis.
