A sample group of adults was trained in discipleship for the purpose of developing a discipleship program.  A pretest and posttest were used with the committee and a control group.  A survey revealed areas of interest in discipleship, and the committee developed a program based on the results.  The program was evaluated by church leadership and outside parties. Up to 80 percent of new members of a congregation leave within the first year. Participants from seven adult new memeber classes at St Peter's By the Sea Presbyterian Church (Rancho Palos Verdes, California) met monthly for six months in homes of the class members.  The evenings were divided between basic Bible study and personal sharing. Group 1 used one-to-one curriculum from Church Dynamics International; Group 2 used CDI curriculum with Kolb's learning styles added.  Groups were pre- and posttested with the Spiritual Well Being Inventory.  The null hypothesis was reached; thus, statistically, the thesis could not be proven true. However, each participant was given an exit interview. Worn-out cliches have significance only when defined by our adoption by God.  In step one, the Christian life is defined and applied.  Step two deals with specific problems indigenous to modern American Christianity. Theological insights from J Fowler, ethicist Glen Stassen, and Craig Dykstra were woven into a complex decision-making model for ethical decision-making. Literary research from Chile, as well as the United States, revolved around the cultural factors that operate within this focused Latin American community.  Theological, pastoral, and structural factors were considered as well. The social research tools involved structured interviewing and pretest/posttest questionnaires.
