By examining three Puritan figures, it seeks to demonstrate how the Puritans dedicated work and its rewards to God's glory and the common good. Current research is used to study trends in giving and stewardship strategies among evangelical Christians. Spiritual tensions arise in personal and community contexts when faithful Christian stewardship is not practiced. This Doctor of Ministry Project researched the underlying biblical and historical sources of Orthodox offering practices.  Members of three Orthodox Christian mission parishes were engaged in a dialog, to probe existing beliefs and practices of financial offering and the explore the Orthodox vision of stewardship. This paper considered how to form these strategies by comparing the attitudes of present-day Serbs toward money and the church with the experience of churches in North America in relationship to money and discipleship formation. Presently the word stewardship has mostly negative connotations and results; consequently pastors mostly avoid the subject.  The author, a mainline church pastor, draws on personal and several colleagues' experiences and evidence of trends in other mainline churches to discuss the subject. Humor, while more acceptable in modern homiletic strategy, has been characteristically absent in the stewardship message.  This project suggests the gifts of humor align nicely with the needs of stewardship. The project sought to answer the question whether intentional instruction from scripture over a nine-week period would increase per capita spending toward the local church with corresponding changes in attitudes toward giving. The method of instruction was to administer a pre-course evaluation followed by nine weeks of instruction, followed by a post-course evaluation.
