Project"],"creator_tesim":["Dencler, Claude L."],"subject_tesim":["United Church of Christ","Church history","Christian stewardship"],"abstract_tesim":["During the decade of the 1980s the Penn Northeast Conference of the United Church of Christ (encompassing the counties of Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon, Monroe, Lucerne, Columbia, Pike, Lackawanna, Wayne, Susquehanna, and Bradford, (in northern Pennsylvania) made available to its churches a financial stewardship program entitled, Breakthrough in the 80’s. The intent of that program was to help local churches obtain, from their members, more money for the ministry and mission of the Church. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the Breakthrough in the 80’s Program. The first task will be to offer an overview of the development of stewardship as a key theological concept. Secondly will be presented a brief historical sketch of the UCC churches in the Conference, tracing their origin to the German people who first came to the shores of North America in the seventeenth century. Next will be offered a description of the program itself, including its original purposes, its evolution over the decade it was offered, and a listing of the resources used. The evaluation of the Breakthrough Program will be presented in an objective and subjective manner. The numbers and statistics will present the facts of the program’s effectiveness, while the insights gained from the subjective evaluation will offer learnings that often speak louder than mere figures. There are four main goals: content creation; publication of the content; distribution of content for teaching/preaching; and engagement with the content – presentations to targeted market segments. The application of the dissertation project is to communicate that the practice of giving in the church community today can be informed, enriched, and inspired by the biblical patterns and principles found in Old Testament narratives. The core of the dissertation project is the drafting of a preaching/teaching series on profiles of giving in the Old Testament based on a selection of historical narratives drawn from the Pentateuch and Historical Books. This decline has caused many pastors to be concerned about their ability to survive. As a consequence, churches have focused on survival tactics which result in an inward focused church in order to safeguard their limited resources. This inward focus minimizes missional ministry and ignores the pain and brokenness of people in the community that surrounds the church. This issue is particularly impactful in the urban context, where social challenges are prevalent and evidenced by the visible amount of homelessness, hunger, and poverty in the community. This thesis investigates the utilization of preaching stewardship to encourage growth in missional outreach in a small urban church. The preacher must be intentional about developing and delivering sermons that demonstrate the symmetry between stewardship and outreach ministry. Young Life staff members are trained in how to proclaim the gospel and program activities in terms of discipleship and spiritual formation, yet field staff members have been trained to use a different paradigm that is secularized for fundraising. There is potential for a language shift and corresponding paradigm shift in fundraising training that could guide the Young Life fundraiser to venture into a more familiar and theological concept: community instead of commerce and spiritual formation instead of commodification.The two core research questions that I am addressing in this project are: In what ways does raising support for Young Life connect to the practice of faith? And, how can fundraising be re-conceived in terms of Christian spirituality? Data has been collected from personal interviews, Young Life archives, books written about Young Life, and published reports within the organization. Second, this project will help the congregation discover and then utilize the resources that God provides each day. These resources reflect God’s justice and love.
