Church leadership went through a self-evaluation and drew up a ten-year financial report.  They designed a questionnaire and used it to analyze change.  The minister delivered six sermons on financial stewardship.  Findings showed that attitudes did not generate the shortfall in giving.  The denomination sets goals too high.  Members gave generously to a variety of causes.  Leaders then guided small group discussions to encourage members, discuss allocation of funds, and make suggestions for the 1993 budget. These were based on the biblical concept of the tithe, the stewardship teachings of Jesus and Paul, a theology of money, and various psychological motivations. The process included outside consultation, a four-session study course and five sermons on stewardship.  The pre- and post-course evaluation demonstrated that the study course significantly changed beliefs about stewardship and tithing, and promoted participation in the endowment fund. The study provides a biblical, theological, and historical foundation for stewardship, psychological temperament, and the relationship of the two.  The responses of seventy-eight individuals from three different congregations to a forty-question survey were analyzed. It is commonly viewed as a necessary evil for the survival of the church.  This project explores the role of the sermon in developing healthy stewardship awareness and practice by following the homiletical preparation of five pastors during the traditional fall stewardship campaign.  Reactions of the congregations are recorded through case studies which come from a small sharing group within each church. The material was field-tested for its effectiveness.  The theological thread in this thesis is the conviction that stewardship is a living out of the Christian's baptism.  The impact of the program is not limited only to the increase in benevolence. There was an approximate 25 per cent increase in worship attendance.
