By law, schools offer a limited scope of sexuality in curriculum confined to relatively universal values and medical information. As a community of faith, the church has an essential voice and obligation to provide sexuality education beyond what the secular world provides tweens, youth in grades 4-7, and their parents during this crucial developmental stage. Connecticut Conference","Christianity","Funeral rites and ceremonies","United Church of Christ--Worship"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This dissertation examines the rites that members and churches of the Connecticut Conference of the United Church of Christ perform when a member of the community dies. A distinction between a 'funeral' and 'memorial service' is established, with a funeral defined as a rite provided by the Church at the death of a Christian that is both a rite of passage for the dead and a service of the worship of God for the living, and a memorial service identified as a communal gathering that focuses more on eulogizing and remembering the deceased and less on the overt worship of God. By examining the difference between the two, and by looking at historic liturgical sources, it is clear that in the Connecticut Conference at this time, most rites are memorial services rather than funerals. Assessment was made by means of a qualitative analysis of worship bulletins for rites at the time of death that were submitted by seventy-two of the Connecticut Conference churches, in which worship patterns, hymns and scriptures were identified in order to construct a 'moment-in-time' snapshot of commonalities among churches in a tradition that cherishes individual expression and resists standard liturgies imposed from the denomination. As a result, participants indicated high-level knowledge of computers, and average to minimal knowledge and use of information resources via today's technology. A descriptive survey was conducted. The study identified the enormous impact of Confucianism on the leadership challenges of SBC alumnae. The alumnae's top ten leadership challenges include overcommitment, burnout, perfectionism, overly high expectation of oneself, balancing family and ministry, balancing motherhood and ministry, conflict resolution, implementing change in ministry, decision making, and excessive concern over the criticism toward oneself. It also provided an avenue for people to discuss their own death and to begin the process of pre-planning their funerals as a way to celebrate their life story and take some of the burden off their family. For many, these two influences are oxymoronic.
