The intent of this project is to create an environment of transformation for the development of virtuous leaders at Crosspoint Church in Hemet, California.  This project, therefore, developed lectures on the creation ordinances of Genesis, the wisdom sayings of Proverbs, the beatitudes of Matthew's gospel, and the key vice and virtue lists of the New Testament.  The research design combined thirteen weeks of instruction, weekly sermonic reading, daily practice of the spiritual disciplines, and evaluation instruments. Method: a sociological questionnaire was implemented on a select group of Michigan Adventists and three focus groups; a manual was constructed and refined in two pilot lay-training seminars.  Results: Adventists had stereotypical perceptions of Jewish people, but were willing to be educated for interaction.  Evaluations revealed that participants' understanding of Jewish people improved.  Follow-up suggestions were recommended.  Conclusions: Adventists' attitudes toward Jews are influenced by theology, a lack of familiarity, ignorance, and stereotypes.  Lay and clergy training seminars are needed. Three passages from Paul's writings (Eph. 1:4-10; 4:1-16; and 1 Corinthians 12) were researched as they relate to cross-cultural partnerships characterized by grace, including Paul's views of community, use of gifts, use of power, and grace.  The theoretical issues researched focused on Geert Hofstede's dimensions of individualism, power distance, and uncertainty avoidance. Participants wrote journals weekly and reflected together on their experiences.  With cultural interest in keeping sabbath growing, the author learned that the church should not replicate the Jewish sabbath, nor should it carelessly adapt it. The author uses the West African oral traditions of storytelling as practiced by the West African griot to develop the images of pastor/griot and the preacher/griot.  Using these images and the Emmaus Road story found in Luke 24:13-35, the author develops the Emmaus Road model for pastoral care and the formation of the funeral sermon. As interviews from hospital chaplains converse with recent research on negative faith coping, and with St. Thérèse of Lisieux's experience of pulmonary tuberculosis and a trial of faith during her last eighteen months, chronicled in Story of a Soul, twelve themes emerge. Presents an interfaith model for how the teachings and practices of the Buddhist traditions might be utilized by Christians in their own spiritual development. This model is based on a 'Spiritual Formation Guidebook' designed around the framework of the Buddhist Noble Eightfold Path and including corresponding Christian insights. A sampling of laity, clergy, and seminary professors used the guidebook for one month and then provided their overwhelmingly positive evaluations.
