Pastors face a number of unaddressed challenges created by the infiltration of the polarizing political issues that cause threats to both corporate church unity and individual spiritual growth in congregants. \r\n\r\nThis study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with six senior pastors, one theological director of an international Christian publication, and one former religious liberties attorney who is currently a religion and politics commentator who interviews pastors weekly for a news organization. The interviews focused on gaining data with four research questions:\r\n\r\n1.\tWhat are some of the characteristics of Christian nationalism that pastors are observing within their congregations? \r\n2.\tWhat are some of the ways pastors are addressing what they are observing?\r\n3.\tWhat are the some of the ways troubled congregants are responding to pastors?\r\n4.\tWhat encourages pastors who are dealing with this?\r\n\r\nThe literature review focused on three key areas to allow the reader to better understand the phenomenon of Christian nationalism and the varying degrees of threat it poses to the church in America. In addition to a review of the biblical framework of identity, those areas were: political identity markers of Christian nationalism, correlation of information illiteracy with Christian nationalism, and the lack of principled pluralism in Christian nationalism thought. \r\n\r\nThis study concluded that there are several necessary components to addressing the issues and strengthening Christian identity. They are reflection on the past, relationship in the present, and responsible action in the future. Related to these components, this study found that pastors face major challenges in shepherding their people: the lack of congregants’ biblical and historical knowledge, the proliferation of information sources that create congregants’ antipathy toward those who disagree with them, and congregants’ lack of desire to commit to a healthy way of living within a pluralistic nation. To address these challenges, this study identified practices which will contribute to better knowledge, civil friendship and respect, and a commitment to upholding healthy pluralism in America."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.covenantlibrary.org/etd/2022/Gabrysch_Kay_DMin_2022.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"_version_":1816909007479111680,"timestamp":"2024-11-27T20:30:55.680Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:35:26Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:36:09Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5a7d56cf-e7fa-4f9c-b389-0803658b3111","accessControl_ssim":["584e9db3-cd17-4f5f-8793-3df76e1336a7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Discovering why parishioners of unity do not engage in social activism"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:35:25Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:47:24Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c83c7504-a6e7-40ee-96b6-2d877fc53071"],"hasLease_ssim":["c45b971b-1267-4172-948b-c04358ec073c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Ashland Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["William H Myers"],"year_tesim":["2017"],"location_tesim":["Missouri"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Michael W Walker"],"keyword_tesim":["Social Christian ethics"],"publisher_tesim":["Ashland Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christianity and politics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of my project was to discover why parishioners do not engage in social justice activism at the Unity Church in Unity Village, Missouri. Eating, drinking, and enjoyment represent communal practices that counteract the social fragmentation of living under hegemonic bureaucracy. The aim of the first missionaries of making the Great Lakes Region of Africa the heartland of Christianity has been somehow fulfilled. The God of Jesus Christ remains the ultimate reference of the people as they express it in various situations: whether in time of joy, especially the time of suffering, or even in the everywhere on the buses etc. In addition there is a great participation in the sacraments that is stunning and observable on a daily basis reaching its apex on the Sunday celebrations. Unfortunately the socio-poolitical structure has completely collapsed to the point that most observers question themselves as to why the complete lack of witness in the public arena. The question is very challenging because most of the political leaders are practicing Catholics. Evidently there is a great need of rediscovering the inspirational values of Catholic Social Teaching and make it the focus of the new evangelization in the twenty-first century. The situation of unending suffering of the people of Bukavu and the whole DRC calls for a quick action to educate the consciences of all the catholic political leaders and the laity to promote the common good and foster good government that will ensure the greater good of the whole nation. It requires a new project of society for which catholic Social Teaching is a great resource in a city/country where the majority of leaders are Catholics. The urgent task is to foster a new pastoral action that gears at educating and empowering the laity to rediscover their noble mission that is to become the 'light of the world' and the 'salt of the earth' in the temporal sphere. They are called to be the ambassadors of Christ in the temporal sphere."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b51273d2-7ff5-4ecb-af24-64508c2367ad"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129628893511680,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:18:44.430Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:20:53Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:44:18Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b9461971-5bee-4af9-ac85-42c90fb1641e","accessControl_ssim":["ce361f9d-3642-4e77-956e-70bd5d5c6d43"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Clergy political engagement in Zambia"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:20:52Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:28:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c14ae9e5-4d1c-4f0f-8f01-77e78e4b531f"],"hasLease_ssim":["8124c512-f8f7-4569-9340-35a20e8d04f1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Ashland Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Leroy A Solomon"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"location_tesim":["Zambia"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Paul Bupe"],"publisher_tesim":["Ashland Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Politics and government","Church and state","Clergy--Political activity","Christianity and politics","Zambia"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This research demonstrates that the locus of sin in in people's hearts rather than political systems. The conclusion was that the parishioners view voting as a moral obligation and an effective tool for community transformation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["United Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f0f9c284-37b6-440c-96ab-39e6509e82ee"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129199104229376,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:11:54.551Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:06:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:50:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8cde9b5a-36b2-4ffa-a6d8-8e532fd4db3b","accessControl_ssim":["06df5d57-074b-4ed0-9a03-c0b6ef705266"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The polarization of United Methodism"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:06:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:15:49Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a0a5f9ed-eb4d-4294-b9f9-90c4732ef78a"],"hasLease_ssim":["7cba3eaf-145d-43ec-af37-e8a514c18b02"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Raymond F Pendleton"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Deron K Boyer"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Values","Polarization (Social sciences)","Christianity and politics","Church controversies--United Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The once vibrant United Methodist Church is losing members at an alarming rate. Although fingers are being pointed in all directions, no one seems to want to take responsibility for the collapse. The church has become an organization that treats symptoms, but continues to overlook the problem. This thesis will look past those symptoms in order to obtain a clear diagnosis of the underlying problem that exists in the church today. It will be discovered that polarization is that problem. It is the byproduct of years of theological, doctrinal, and missional conflict between the two dominant political polarities of the church: the progressive liberal polarity and the conservative evangelical polarity. It will be discovered that the agendas of each polarity are guided by a long established set of intrinsic core values. When these values are in conflict, polarization occurs, and this is why the church continues to struggle."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131614060740608,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:50:17.633Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:27:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:55:01Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"45b5ef89-37ea-46e7-8fa8-c50c7fd5e15c","accessControl_ssim":["da6eee69-afa3-45a4-8db6-030212cd2341"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["If it had not been for the Lord on my side: a model on how to develop church properties in your community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:27:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:09:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e8ff4634-4c75-4d8a-a7dc-c4e74357f723"],"hasLease_ssim":["cd452ea5-8ed1-4502-8cb4-80823dbb5961"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Paul Hertig","Robert C Linthicum"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Larzell Mark Hensley"],"keyword_tesim":["Church and community"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary (OH)"],"subject_tesim":["Second Baptist Church (Columbus, Ohio)","Christianity and politics","Social action"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project assesses the role of the 165 year-old Second Baptist Church of Columbus, Ohio, in politics, education, and religion.
