Sometimes, larger buildings become an unsustainable burden, to the detriment of mission and ministry of a congregation. This project uses the template of the Tabernacle to lead a congregation through a simulated wilderness experience, to worship in a neutral space. This process gives insight into a congregation's relationship with a building that has become unsustainable. The resulting exploration allows them to prepare to vacate their building, while revitalizing their ministry. A rationale reflecting a habitus of practical theology develops.  Pastoral strategies arise from this rationale. Based on biblical study and literature research, the project proposes three phases through which relocating organizations pass: the current zone, the transformation zone, and the future zone. A congregational survey and interviews with seven pastors of relocated churches identify spiritual and emotional issues in each phase and the tasks involved in resolving them. The new facilities were consecrated in June, 1981, with over half of the total cost paid. Problems included finding a suitable location on a property large enough to accommodate building needs and programmatic endeavors, and addressing factors such as shape and size.  The location of the present church was a factor in selecting a site.  After finding the location, financing had to be secured. Three groups made the decisions: 1) the Information Committee which collected and analyzed the preferences, addresses and location preferences of the congregation; 2) the Land Search Committee which looked for the land and compiled data on each site; 3) the Trustee Board which advised and had to approve before a land offer could be submitted to the congregation for final approval.  Finally, the land had to be rezoned before it could be used for a church building. After approximately ten months of methodical work, the Christian Community Church purchased 1.5 acres of land in Toledo, Ohio.  The pastor was selected as the designer and overall chairman of the project. Using surveys, the author assessed the surrounding community's felt needs and researched the congregation's self-image using theological and sociological typologies.
