Three examples of successful adoptions were studied in a multiple case study design. The researcher's thesis was that by studying past church adoptions we can begin to understand, describe, and possibly even quantify a process that will lead to more successful adoptions in the future. Results describe optimal conditions and best practices, as well as a framework based on John Kotter's Eight Steps for Leading Change. Using resources modeled on palliative care, leaders assist congregants through the stages of merger or closure.  An educational course for leaders participating in the Lay Servant Ministry program of the United Methodist Church was created. The three-year research focuses on the restarting experience of the Wellfleet United Methodist Church in Massachusetts, which employed strategies from both experiences, the planting of new churches and the turning around of troubled congregations.  The research describes the good, the bad, and the ugly of changing course in people's spiritual journeys and congregational lives. This study found 113 churches had been planted.  Surprisingly, only ten (9%) closed, another five had fewer than twenty in average attendance, yielding a failure rate (13%) far lower than expected (65-75%). Churches targeting ethnic/linguistic groups were most numerous and likely to succeed. Biblical and theological foundations are explored, especially a Christian understanding of failure and success. In the beginning of the two-year saga, they perceive their task as survival in spite of all obstacles. They are both adversarial and victimized. The situation requires a relentless application of practical truth and pastoral care in a context of theological reflection. It reviews why and how amalgamation took place, and surfaces the need for an appraisal in response to new insights and perspectives.  In rural realignment, 'small is beautiful' and attitudinal and spiritual dimensions play an important part.  The report relates the work of the candidate with his Ministry Base Group and with people who experienced amalgamation: those whose churches were closed, those who were in the host churches, the ministers of closed churches, and the people who prevented their churches from closing.  Amalgamation was, for the most part, a negtive experience with a legacy of unresolved problems. Thirty-five interviews were conducted from participants in the 1989 consolidation in Chicago's Englewood and the San Francisco consolidation after its 1989 earthquake. The study explores the roles of ritual and pastoral care in highly conflicted situations using the praxis-theory-praxis method of practical theology and through the lens of trauma and reconciliation.
