Although fingers are being pointed in all directions, no one seems to want to take responsibility for the collapse.  The church has become an organization that treats symptoms, but continues to overlook the problem.  This thesis will look past those symptoms in order to obtain a clear diagnosis of the underlying problem that exists in the church today.  It will be discovered that polarization is that problem.  It is the byproduct of years of theological, doctrinal, and missional conflict between the two dominant political polarities of the church: the progressive liberal polarity and the conservative evangelical polarity. It will be discovered that the agendas of each polarity are guided by a long established set of intrinsic core values. The thesis suggests that if United Methodists, in particular, can understand the differing ways they hold the Bible as authoritative, they will be better able to respect others' beliefs, and be more likely to live visibly the unity about which they read in the Scriptures.  Research on sociology, education, and small group theory are shared. Categories of biblical interpretation based on how different persons hold the Bible as authoritative are presented. Using analogies drawn from the Genesis narrative about Jacob's life, the theoretical approach for this study evolved from cultural anthropology, filtered through family systems and object-relations principles. The purpose is to reveal underlying structural changes that are fueling the UM debate. The scope is confined to interview material gathered from six United Methodist clergypersons.
