While some degree of effectiveness has flowed from this process, I have felt an increasing desire to have a more complete understanding of the theological position reflected in the planning approach I have followed. Thus, I have chosen in this Project Report to fulfill this desire by making an ecclesiological study that expresses my theological view of the Church and the relationship of that view to the program planning procedures I have utilized within my tradition of congregational church polity. Therefore, in what I am titling, “An Ecclesiological Rationale of a Congregational Planning Process,” I have sought to pursue my search in the following way. In the first major division of this dissertation, I am presenting the Project Report itself. In it I have made two divisions. In Part A, I deal with the concerns related to making the ecclesiological study I referred to above. However, little research has examined senior pastors' experiences within and aspirations for CPNs. This study explored how senior pastors engage with CPNs. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six senior pastors in the Presbyterian Church in America who have been actively involved in the Southwest Church Planting Network for over a decade. Four research questions guided this research: (1) What benefits do senior pastors experience when they engage with church-planting networks? (2) What challenges do senior pastors face when they engage with church-planting networks? (3) How do senior pastors navigate the challenges they face when they engage with church-planting networks? (4) What are senior pastors’ hopes for engagement with church-planting networks? The literature review examined lessons from the Book of Acts for contemporary CPN development, and research on network dynamics and organizational hierarchies. The key benefits identified included camaraderie, compelling vision, and access to funding. Primary challenges included diminished relational connections over time, loss of aspirational leadership, and complacency. Pastors navigated challenges through singular loyalty to the CPN. Hopes for the future centered around prayer, compelling rationale for planting, unified philosophy, clear metrics, new models, sustainable funding, dedicated leadership, training and coaching. These findings provide valuable insights for CPN leaders seeking to enhance senior pastor involvement. The nature of entrepreneurship affects many aspects of the church planting endeavor. It affects the needed personality traits of the church planter, the nature of a church planting opportunity, the model of church planting, and the relationship between church planters and their calling organizations, and even the conflicts that can occur in those relationships. The current literature does not address the nature of entrepreneurship in church planting. Church planters and their calling organizations that do not account for the nature of entrepreneurship risk the health of the church planting venture. \r\n\r\nThis study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with church planters and the leaders of their calling organization in three different church planting situations. The current literature was reviewed in the areas of entrepreneurship and church planting. Also, original research was conducted through personal interviews with three church planting situations, both with the planter and the leader of the calling organization. The literature review and interview analysis focused on three key areas: the entrepreneurial traits of church planters, the available models for church planting as they relate to entrepreneurship, and the entrepreneurial aspects of the relationship between church planters and their calling organizations. \r\n\r\nThis study concluded that there is a continuum of degrees of entrepreneurship for the church planting endeavor. This continuum speaks to the personality traits involved in how church planters choose a church planting situation and how calling organizations choose a church planter, it speaks to the choice of a church planting model, and it speaks to the structure of the relationship between church planters and their calling organization, as well as conflicts that can occur in the relationship. It shows that more people can plant a church than think they can plant a church.
