Adults gather to reflect and share with one another spiritual topics affecting their lives. In the perspective of the American experience, the elements, benefits, and challenges of small faith groups are described. Research indicates that small faith groups have an impact on the faith life of adults. The spirituality in small faith groups is explored in connection with Franciscan values. The project invited lay people and clergy, engaged in the praxis of ministry to form a small peer group, to make a covenant as a group, to write theological reflections for shared discussion and group discussion and group reflection, and to move through a process of evaluation of this group experience in light of their ministries and faith lives. One of the assertions of this project is that people of faith and ministry, when engaged in theological reflection with peers realize a transformation of their faith life and in their praxis of ministry. And two, peers whose ministries and faith lives have been transformed by their experiences in peer theological reflection through God's grace will then become vehicles of transformation to the church at large. The experiment involved six adult participants and five resource guests, and lasted eleven weeks in the Autumn of 2002. The research project included role-playing and actival meetings with Jewish guests. Results were both academic and existential. The six group meetings included instruction in the spiritual disciplines of lectio divina, journal keeping and prayer; Bible study of Haggai; corporate prayer; and personal reflection. Fifteen participants in two groups (ten women and five men) ranged in age from twenties to eighties. Group participants demonstrated increased understanding and practice of spiritual disciplines, increased desire for involvement in spiritual community and increased frequency of prayer. The project was conducted in three phases: (1) a four-hour introductory MBTI workshop, (2) an eight-hour MBTI team building workshop, and (3) one-hour review sessions conducted weekly for eight consecutive weeks. Both pro-active and quantitative methods of research were utilized. A training plan was developed utilizing available leadership materials and existing research. The training included seven didactic sessions covering the subjects of team leadership, servant leadership, personal leadership, team communication, team conflict, team spirituality, and team purpose/function. Each individual completed a spiritual gift inventory and participated in a consensus building activity. The team went on a weekend retreat which included one of the didactic sessions, and six different ropes course challenges. ReFocusing is a two to five-year revitalization process that produces harvest-focused churches led by church leaders committed to vision and the raising up of leaders.
