If a parish is to grow, the total membership should be made aware of this need; and the laity should be given a chance to address themselves to this task.  In developing the project, much information came from interviews, personal experience and readings and observations in black parishes. The first was to train active church members to become involved in ministry. This objective involved persuading the trainees that ministry for Christians other than pastors is scriptural. It then involved instruction in what it takes to be a minister.  The second objective was to assist new members in becoming actively involved in the life of the church. The key ingredient in this was the sponsorship program. Each trainee signed a commitment to sponsor a new or inactive member. A model for church growth based on hospitality (Hebrews 13:1-6) was developed.  A program to reverse the membership trend in Eastminster Presbytery (59 churches in northeastern Ohio) included clergy and lay convocations, a major training event and a follow-up consisting of training volunteers in church growth. The pastor achieved this by appointing four committees.  The history committee looked into how the church grew by caring in the past.  The theology committee delved into the biblical and theological bases for caring.  The community committee studied the community and its need for caring. The planning committee then took the work of the other three committees and developed three to five years of caring plans. The project develops exegetical and historical perspectives of spiritual gifts and devises a strategy for church growth utilizing spiritual gifts.  Participants identified their spiritual gifts by participating in a spiritual gifts workshop.  The workshop divided participants into two ministry groups and facilitated their exercising those gifts in ministry.  A church growth committee, comprised of persons with the gift of administration, developed plans for growth.  Gifted participants, possessing other spiritual gifts, made those plans a reality. Those indicating 'very strong' sense of belonging identified several motivating factors: strong worship and educational life; theological diversity; personal initiative toward getting involved; the feeling that the Christian faith--as expressed in this congregation--makes a significant difference in one's life; and that each member has some opportunity to affect the congregation's life. Particularly the word 'shalom' was used and related within the congregation that struggled with the issue of whether or not to remain in the near-urban area of a medium-sized city, or to relocate to an area in the same part of the city, but two miles away to gain room for growth.
