This project concentrates on three growing churches in Saigon--An-Dong, Tran Cao Van and Truong Minh Giang--to attempt to discover reasons and factors that have enabled these churches to grow under Communist oppression from 1975 to 1983.  The project includes a short, critical review of the history of Protestantism in Vietnam and a discussion of various forms of Communist persecution of religion, citing the positive and negative effects on the Protestant church. After education and planning, the project implemented two programs in a declining, thirty-year old church.  One used the church's strengths and resources; the other required strengths and resources the church did not have. Significant growth in attendance, membership and income resulted from the first program; nothing resulted from the second.  The author concludes that programs which use available strengths and resources will be more successful and develop more rapidly. Statistics (over fifty thousand) in twenty-five categories from 105 SIM mission stations for the years 1931 to 1963 as found in the SIM archives were analyzed by calculating correlational coefficients between the dependent variable, church attendance, and twenty independent variables. From this analysis, six principles have been identified contributing to numerical growth: a church-centered life, conservative theology, dedicated pastors, prayer meetings, small group meetings, and the homogeneous unit.  The writer seeks to discover the correlation between the implementation of these principles and church growth.  By comparing the rate of growth between those churches that practice these principles with those that do not, a valid judgment was made whether a correlation exists between the adherence of these principles and church growth.  The writer's hypothesis was not supported. Evaluations were collected from participants, the field supervisor, and the project director.
