The thesis was that churches that corporately emphasized the pastoral roles of enabler and evangelist grow more rapidly than those which place less emphasis on these roles.  A questionnaire was administered to two groups of churches -- a control group of churches that grows approximately ten percent per annum and a randomly selected group of churches that grow slowly or decline in size. The basic concern of this project was to determine how the strategy might be implemented in the Eugene Seventh-day Adventist Church.  A theological investigation and an examination of contemporary concepts of caring in management literature form a basis for the study.  Two surveys establish the felt needs of the community and its awareness and attitude toward Seventh-day Adventists.  A third survey documents the attitudes and behavior of church members which enhance or inhibit church growth.  A narrative describes the planning and administration of a one-year program for caring church ministry in the Eugene, Oregon, Seventh-day Adventist church.  During the year's program the number of new members added to the congregation was minimal. In the last chapter, both church growth enhancing and church growth inhibiting characteristics of the Eugene church are identified.  Heritage and contemporary goals of members must be respected for a church growth climate to exist. The author used the Likert System to complete his analysis.  He gathered statistical performance data on 144 selected churches in four measurable areas: profession of faith, Sunday school attendance, worship attendance and financial support.  Pastors and church members completed a survey designed to measure leadership.  The author tabulated data and performed a statistical analysis.  The findings supported the hypothesis.  The closer a church moves toward the participative style of leadership the greater will be its measurable growth.  The study also revealed that the area of financial support was most effected by leadership style and profession of faith was least effected. The author formulates eight principles from leading church growth authorities which are used as a basis of the analysis.  The statistics, a survey of significant people and interviews of four recent superintendents form the basis of the data. Church growth is a product of the cooperative endeavor of a pastor and laymen.  For this project the pastors' Church Study Committee and the laymen's local Church Growth Committee were organized.  Seminars were held and questionnaires were prepared to identify church growth factors and their effect in the local churches.  The pastors' committee evaluated the questionnaires. The results were shared with the Church Growth Committee in each local church.
