The church has increased from a new work in August of 1980 to 10,000 participants by August of 1985. Its growth has come about largely through the extraordinary ability of pastor Tim Timmons to communicate to young, unchurched middle-class Americans and the church's highly organized commitment to forming small group ministries to meet the various needs of those who attend the church. The pastor and session proposed a hypothesis which was that the establishment of a positive sense of self-worth, which would come about as a result of better self-understanding, agreement of purpose and setting of goals, would reverse the decline. The hypothesis was measured by surveys. Visible increased activity was noted as was a stronger financial picture, as well. The validity of the hypothesis was substantiated."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130183222165504,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:27:33.079Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:52:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:43:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c5d57d75-1d6d-4864-a82b-4842c3cd7c39","accessControl_ssim":["8cd85b0b-bbcc-4d6e-9c20-8138c3ff0fc2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Enabling wholistic evangelization through congregational assessment"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:52:56Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:48:55Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fb7d300c-6186-4c4a-a6c2-7d0563adb676"],"hasLease_ssim":["10252009-6af6-4fe2-9044-408061f75770"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Douglas E Wingeier"],"year_tesim":["1986"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Lynn LaVaine Pries"],"keyword_tesim":["Wesleyanism"],"publisher_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Evangelistic work","Church growth","Church membership","United Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This paper analyzes the reasons for the decline of church membership in mainline churches since the early 1960s; considers the relevance of the Wesleyan movement for evangelization today; and proposes a model for wholistic evangelization that seeks to build bridges between a concern for personal salvation and a desire for social justice. A project of congregational assessment was used to enable an urban congregation with declining membership to be engaged in evangelization.
