The study examines the crisis, the denomination's historical and social origins, basis of union, and current mission strategies. If a parish is to grow, the total membership should be made aware of this need; and the laity should be given a chance to address themselves to this task.  In developing the project, much information came from interviews, personal experience and readings and observations in black parishes. It explores antebellum evangelical expansion in the South and the North, plus divergent religious movements.  It features the post-Civil War protestant mainstream, then the Social Gospel and fundamentalism. The project then comments upon Australian cultural traits and analyzes a survey circulated in the presbytery of the central west aimed at discovering what people think about shared ministries.  Theological reflection analyzes ministry in a secular society and is illustrated by pen pictures and case studies.
