The project included three major phases. Phase one examined the missional church movement focusing on the Sunday School or small group ministries. The second phase utilized a strategy team of leaders from the association to develop a missional Sunday School strategy for their association. During the third phase, associational leaders adopted the new strategy to empower Greater Orlando Baptist Association churches to train believers who think and live as missionaries. This study found 113 churches had been planted.  Surprisingly, only ten (9%) closed, another five had fewer than twenty in average attendance, yielding a failure rate (13%) far lower than expected (65-75%). Churches targeting ethnic/linguistic groups were most numerous and likely to succeed. Biblical and theological foundations are explored, especially a Christian understanding of failure and success. The Zimbabwean United Methodist Church is continuing to experience considerable numerical and spiritual growth. However, pastors do not have educational resources which are adequate to train new members and mature old ones. The preparation of candidates for baptism and confirmation is identified as a critical need and the project focuses on developing materials to be used by pastors in this preparation. The intent is to equip pastors with teaching strategies and tools (rather than lesson plans), and material is compiled from historical and biblical perspectives. Resources utilized include conversations with district superintendents and pastors, surveys of church members, and archival material accessed in Zimbabwe. The fruition of this vision is to establish an urban ministry resource center to serve churches, thus promoting the spread of the Gospel.  The Emmanuel Gospel Center in Boston was the model.  Social analysis, study of urban Christian literature, relevant biblical texts, hexagoning and implementing ministries around the felt needs of urban Christian leaders were the methodology.  This research reveals that churches in Boston and Springfield are multiplying. Evangelical communities have become fragmented due to a number of destructive behaviors. The result is that a convergence of powerful stresses in directly harming the Brazilian community. Despite the diversity of beliefs and practices, many Brazilian immigrants have been sustained in the displacement and adaptation to American society by regular church attendance.  However, many have burned out. There is a dearth of research addressing addiction and spiritual abuse among members of Brazilian Christian Churches.  The goal of this thesis is to explore and clearly identify how this spiritual abuse has occurred, what its impacts on the community are and to suggest some approaches to heal the victims. First, the paper examines some of the root causes of dysfunction in Brazilian churches. Second, a review of pertinent literature on understanding Brazilians and their faith is presented. Third, systems thinking is used to determine the current level of dysfunction and abuse in order to identify strategies for healing. A biblical model for revival based on 2 Chronicles 7:14 is presented, along with compelling historical illustrations, and a tour of sites associated with revival and awakening in the Housatonic Valley region.  Together they demonstrate that when pastors and churches set themselves to preparing their hearts for renewing, God sends it. The author explores how people who are displaced from their cultures and/or families of origin experience the church as 'home'.
