However, facing the new millennium, the Korean churches need to be more matured and renewed for the growth in quality by the training of the congregation to be disciples of Jesus Christ. So, the main focus of this paper is to analyze John Wesley's theological background that made possible his reforming movement, and to investigate the way he developed this tool of renewal, namely, the class meeting. In light of this analysis, the author evaluates whether such a method is still feasible for the contemporary Korean churches today. This conflict relates to the music employed by congregations in their liturgies. In our work, we show that the problem they encounter is not a theological one, as some leaders claim, but a cultural type. Our thesis is that both the 1930's and 1990's hymnodies of the Disciples in Puerto Rico reflect the Christian hope of its members during critical moments. Although with different theological approaches, the final purpose of both hymnodies is the same: the proclamation of a message of salvation. Our study is mostly descriptive with an explanatory goal regarding particular human behavior. Three resources were used to attain our goal: an analysis of the social and economic realities of Puerto Rico; popular knowledge gathered through interviews; and the new hymn book published for the Hispanic churches by the Christian Board of Publications in the United States. Our dissertation proposes a strategy formulation to reduce the tension but also to propitiate positive changes within any given congregation. The main parts of the funeral event such as the service, wake, the committal service, and the repast, are examined as powerful tools of evangelism. In addition, the importance of preaching, singing, and praying during the funeral event have been explored as additional spiritual tools for evangelism. The role of the pastor and laity are explored as care givers offering an open door of opportunity for being evangelists. Despite this fact, there is no accessible, up to date source of recorded history. This dissertation attempts to address that need. This will be done by writing a concise history of North Carolina Baptists that will condense over three hundred years into thirty pages. Following this, a script will be written in order to convert this concise history into a video for our image conscious culture. A deficiency in understanding of North Carolina Baptist history will be documented using two tools. One, a survey of the ministerial employees of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina will be compared with the same survey given to key leaders in North Carolina Baptist life. A second tool used will be phone interviews with leading Baptist educators and historians at institutions of higher learning in North Carolina supported by North Carolina Baptists. Case study and ethnographic research techniques were utilized. The results indicated urbanization was not the sole cause but has had considerable impact on the 'strength' of the Native American cultures and in their interaction with the Christian gospel. Urbanization produces a tension between traditional ways and the dominant culture. The ultimate objective is to develop strategies to retain young adults in the 'fold' and attract young adults who are outside the church.  There are two assumptions involved in this project: (1) statistics show a decline in young adult attendance over the last two decades; and (2) the overall African American Church has been weakened by this loss. It is a supplementary assumption that young adults face personal crises connected with the transitional cycles that occur during this period. A course of action for the church and church leaders is formulated from this project's research. It integrates and outlines biblical and theological bases that make action imperative. The methodology involves interviews with various church leaders in order to ascertain successful programs. Views and opinions of young adults 'in'as well as 'out' of the church are also utilized to discover what causes departure. It is a collection of interviews and articles which document the current movement of community wide unity among the evangelical churches in the city of Modesto, California.  The study begins with the Billy Graham Crusade in 1948 and includes over fourteen separate events or ministries through 1998.  Those studied are both responses to the hand of God as well as proactive movements by community leaders to work together.  The work concludes with three basic concepts which the author believes are transferrable to other communities who are interested in generating a similar community wide church unity.
