Dealing with the needs of commuter households, determining ways to enable them to participate meaningfully in the life and ministry of the church, and facilitating the transformation of a commuter church into an outward focused, community-anchored church are adaptive problems. This project studied the participation in and satisfaction with The Moody Church for the various racial groups in congregation. Based upon the biblical foundation for racially diverse local churches, the goal of the project was to increase the involvement of racial minorities throughout the life of the church--including membership, service, and leadership. The research design included a congregational survey, focus group meetings, and the responses of church leadership. Smithfield Baptist Church located in Gloucester, Virginia served as the context for this project. The researcher hypothesized that the freedom of worship and the availability of relevant ministry opportunities would provoke an attitudinal change in the current parishioner, as well as increase church participation and growth. A mixed methodological approach was used to measure the project's effectiveness including focus groups, pre and post survey questionnaires, workshop questionnaires, and workshop evaluations. The project consisted of three phases. The first phase involved researching the fields of discipleship, one-on-one discipleship, and mentoring. The project director used this research to develop the curriculum for a workshop to equip the selected group. The second phase included the development of workshop lesson plans, a participant workbook, and a discipleship handbook. The third phase involved equipping the selected group using the workshop materials. The workshop consisted of six sessions, including an introductory and concluding sessions. The project director's intent of the project was to develop a systematic method to train selected members to help new adult members grow spiritually. Evaluation of the project confirmed that the workshop was effective in training the selected group to disciple new adult members through one-on-one the story of hospitality ministry at the Chapel of the Cross with emphasis on twelve intentional practices and strategies including worship, new mission statement, open communion, blessing gay unions, global missions, welcoming newcomers, new parish fellowship hall, hospitality strategic planning, funeral hospitality, children with disabilities, ABC sale and faith formation. She studied each of the four generations worshipping in churches currently. She shared preaching expectations of each generation as well as challenges facing pastors from each group. Through research and observation, she crafted six sermons in response to generational differences, expectations, and challenges. This project proposes that this is a detrimental shift away from the church's mission of discipleship. The project seeks to investigate a healthy understanding of membership and explore how the church might faithfully engage new members of the church in a discipleship model of church life. The research was conducted with a participatory action research process by a group of representative members and non-members in a particular church. The conclusion of the research was to make a new member process about nurturing belonging to a community of
