The first was to train active church members to become involved in ministry. This objective involved persuading the trainees that ministry for Christians other than pastors is scriptural. It then involved instruction in what it takes to be a minister.  The second objective was to assist new members in becoming actively involved in the life of the church. The key ingredient in this was the sponsorship program. Each trainee signed a commitment to sponsor a new or inactive member. The method pursued to gather data for this study was personal interviews guided by a pre-tested, uniform questionnaire. The conclusion reached was that the above thesis is true. Its primary purpose was to determine the extent to which members and attenders of a large suburban church were being incorporated into its life and organizational structure.  A research questionnaire and a series of interviews with church members who had dropped out of active involvement with the church were the research tools used to gather data, the analysis of which was used to determine the degree of assimilation. This guide book is written for the purpose of solving that problem. Theological and educational needs of new members were ascertained by research on the relevant literature and a questionnaire.  The final guide book was prepared through developing an experimental curriculum, testing it in the new member class and evaluating it. The book's format consists of 52 lessons in a one year cycle. To uncover these factors twenty-eight 'main-line' Protestant church members were interviewed, each having been a member of a rural or small town church at the time of divorce.  The interviews revealed specific factors that caused some divorcing people to leave the church and other factors that enabled some to remain active. Training materials were prepared, tested in class situations, and critiqued by people with expertise in the areas stated in the thesis.  The study has shown that acceptability by the targeted audience and adequate educational quality are key factors for successful publication of materials.
