During a four-week period, group leaders were trained to lead eight consecutive experimental group sessions.  In the eight-week test period 43 persons were divided into five groups of different age spans, plus one group disregarding age concerns. The project reviewed current literature and interviewed a corporate personnel director and chaplain assignment officers from the US Air Force and US Navy.  The Army Chaplain School administered a questionnaire to Basic and Advanced students, and chaplain colonels completed a similar questionnaire at a senior chaplains' conference. Denominational polity is a critical factor, especially in the initial phases of a chaplain's career.  The army's accession and assignment processes are 'closed,' as in an episcopal polity, but most chaplains come from denominations that are not 'closed.' Chaplains from 'open' clergy placement systems have less positive attitudes toward the army system.
