From the earliest times, the church has struggled with its unity as a 'body'. The twentieth century church is rocked by the growing number of schisms in many congregations.  Dr. mcGahey has served one such congregation trying to pick up the pieces of a major division.  Through the use of personal interviews and questionnaires, mcGahey has tried to evaluate the situation of his congregation.  He has tried to build a sense of unity through a 150th anniversary celebration, to affirm the ministry of his people.  The result is a reawareness of our own need to see ourselves as God's people, not our own. The analysis of the current situation (questionnaire) finds a lack of meaningful involvement which the author traces back to the predominant middle-class orientation of the membership.  He confronts these findings with an 'ecclesiology of renewal' based on Bonhoeffer's concept of the church as 'being for others' and the ecclesiological implications of black theology as proposed by James C Cone. Although the project's original purpose was not to convince that Dionysius was the initial Athenian bishop, convert of Paul (Acts 17:34), it emerged from the actual writings and early attestations that no other chronology was as consistent. There is strong possibility that his given Christian name during the Arcanum period was Theophilus (viz his writings). His mentor, John the Evangelist, he called 'Theologus' or 'Hierotheus'.  (Ignatius was called 'Theophorus', etc). Procedures included 1) an ongoing men's breakfast group to address faith and vocation and participation in a sermon series on the issue; 2) a Health Professionals' Convocation with 18 parishioners for an intensive examination of the same issue.  The results were undramatic: the Health Professionals' Convocation included enlightenment, confusion, controversy and sensitivity.  Of much greater impact were the sharing and interpreting around the event. Programmatic suggestions were referred to appropriate church boards.  An outgrowth of the Convocation, a sharing group on suffering, presently meets weekly.
