Church leaders could use some insight into the current state of Baptist faith and practice. Shocking changes have occurred in the past five decades. This dissertation is specifically written for church leaders. It features a timely perspective on the current reality of Baptist faith and practice. Churches can have and do all the 'right things': congregational unity, biblically faithful worship and teaching, baptisms, large missions receipts, deep savings, community outreach programs, and denominational notoriety--and yet dontinue to experience numerical stagnation and even decline. This project discusses the local church as a living organism exploring the theory that every church is unique such that identifying and actively expressing its congregational DNA can lead to revitalization. In this study the responses to a series of congregational surveys, interviews, and inventories were 'interpreted' and used to identify a church's DNA. The ministerial staff and congregation participated in this project by completing a 360 degree survey of the participants.  The project director presented the results to the ministerial staff in coaching sessions. So many Christians do not experience the peace joy and love of Jesus because they do not have that point of connection with Jesus. Spiritual Disciplines are the greatest means to grow in intimacy and relationship with Jesus Christ. As a result, eleven various Spiritual Disciplines were presented to First Baptist Church, Alexandria, Indiana. The disciplines included in this project were: Journaling, service, bible reading, celebration, meditation, silence and solitude, confession, prayer, worship, fasting, and fellowship. The Spiritual Disciplines were presented to the church through preaching and Sunday School. The model evolved from the real life situation of the Savannah Grove Baptist Church of Effingham, South Carolina. It shows how a congregation diseased with the virus of chaos, conflict and controversy over many years moved to become a semblance of spiritual resourcefulness, a center of health where congregants demonstrate maturity and contribute to healing and wholeness. The project shows that this happened via a Christ-centered model wherein the total congregation became involved in the leadership of the church. Traditional Black Baptist Churches in inner city communities are in a state of plateau and decline needing renewal and revitalization.  The researcher hypothesized that implementation of a strategic six-session Christian leadership training model would transform the church board from change inhibitors to change supporters.  A qualitative action research methodology incorporating preliminary survey, post survey, observations, and reflections was used to evaluate the effectiveness of this project. The project focused on analyzing the church and community demographics, the church's leadership structure, the church's organizations, and the ministries of the church.  The components of the project included: (1) the research of healthy church growth characteristics; (2) the gathering of available healthy church growth models for analysis; (3) the conducting of church surveys and questionnaires with selected leaders; (4) the design, administration, and evaluation of training sessions with the leadership team; and (5) the planning and creation of the strategy.  The final step of the project was the presentation of the strategy to the congregation. The evaluation of the project included expert opinions of the researched models, the equipping materials, and the formation of the strategy. ABE seeks to influence all levels of the ABCUSA through the renewal of churches in the denomination. The thesis asks how pastors that serve churches affiliated with ABE reflect the values of the renewal movement.  This thesis tells of the beginnings of ABE and its role as an evangelical renewal group in the ABCUSA.  It continues with the theological and biblical grounds for renewal and the need for renewal among American Baptists today.  The thesis looks at the need for renewal in mainline denominations of America and other evangelical renewal groups that seek to influence their denominations.  This thesis includes field research that asked pastors how they reflected the values of the renewal movement. Interviews were also conducted to inquire about renewal themes in the local church and in the ABC.  Recommendations are made to support ABE's efforts to work with the pastors of affiliate churches.  The future of the ABC will be determined by its ability to effectively respond to the workings of God's Spirit.
