Chapter one reviews the history of Emley's Hill United Methodist Church from its founding six years after the founding of Methodism in America in 1784 through the first two hundred years, which were most notably marked by a constant cycle of part-time pastors.  Chapter two lays out the polity framework of the United Methodist Church within which the author had to operate.  Chapter three cites pertinent readings that impacted the author's understanding of the setting and the problems faced.  Chapter four presents the project design, describing the work used in gathering the data necessary for renewal. To get congregations 'on the way' toward a revitalized spirit, this project presents through a leadership conference the conceptual (culture and leadership) and theological (church identity) foundations of an integrated pathway (spiritual, structural, theological, and conceptual) of renewal. The goal was to increase the imagination for visioning a new life in the Mid-Ohio District of the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. Representatives of thirty-nine small churches participated in workshops and developed an appreciative inquiry process that they used in their churches.
