This research explores how the use of narrative form and style in preaching increases empathy among the members of St. Matthew Presbyterian Church. After an introduction explaining the rationale for the project, background information about St. Matthew is given.  The two phases of qualitative research-sermon feedback sessions and individual interviews-are reported. Explications of empathy and how these theories played out in the research are woven into the reporting of the research. Data was gathered through survey of literature and questionnaires were given to pastors and lay people to assess their understanding of principles of reformed worship. Others are previously unchurched or 'General Protestant' and thus do not have a Presbyterian/Reformed understanding of the Biblical story (Biblical awareness).  Many had limited time to devote to learning, and the adult education offerings were limited in scope.  In this time of declining Biblical awareness, the goal was to help individuals learn that they are connected to the Biblical witness and need to see their lives as Christians committed to the community of faith with other faithful people.  To help them, this project used education, learning, and dialogue as the basic strategies, but other approaches ('strategic planning' and 're-framing') were utilized. The interventions were to have laity in the congregation design an overall program of Biblical awareness, help persons become grounded in the Biblical faith and see themselves as connected to that faith.  The approaches were initiated with classes, home-studies, creative experiences, and worship opportunities.  It was the aim of these interventions to help move individuals and the congregation to greater depth as Christians. Standard church renewal efforts have not moved the congregation from a numerical and financial plateau.  This study describes how standard Presbyterian polity processes failed to provide for an open and honest dialogue with the congregation which can develop shared vision.  This study describes how the processes of self-assessment and education worked to produce shared vision. The project starts with a case study describing the situation in one small church.  This is followed by an explanation of what happened, resources used, and an evaluation.  A detailed outline of the process followed is included in the last half of the paper.
