To gain an understanding of substance dependence treatment and how this issue has become widespread, the project director researched and provided current statistics on substance dependence. Educational and substance abuse professionals were enlisted to review materials utilized in the development of the workshop. The project director also utilized scripture to validate and support the treatment approach. The project director assisted Christian lay counselors in conceptualizing the nature and character of substance dependence. The project director enabled Christian lay counselors to provide substance dependence treatment by combining a faith-based and twelve-step model. The team approach within the caring community seems to fit this need. The 'team' will be an interdisciplinary team whose goal is to provide a more effective pastoral care. As an ordained clergy in the United Methodist Church, one of my biggest frustrations has always been that the 'job' is bigger than one individual can successfully accomplish. The old adage 'two heads are better than one' rings true to me for Christian ministry. Through the years, many have felt that the laity understands pastoral care as the sole duty of the paid clergy. The scriptures clearly show that Jesus did not understand ministry as an individual endeavor, but as a team approach as he sent his disciples out to minister in pairs. Also, Jesus said, 'When two or more are gathered in my name, I am in the midst of them.' This is an expression of community gathering in Christ's name and ministering not alone, but with Christ in their midst. The field work research methodologies included e-mail questionnaires, writing of seminar teacher and student manuals, receiving peer evaluation of curriculum, and recruiting, teaching, deploying, and evaluating volunteers through a mentoring process. The seminar taught foundations for spiritual care, understanding older adults, basic guidelines for visitation, and the skills of listening spiritual assessment, prayer, and the use of scriptures. The project succeeded in training 38 individuals and deploying nine volunteers who provided 315 visits to residents. This manual examined twelve spiritual disciplines: Devotional Reading, Scripture Memory, Practicing God's Presence, Fasting, Retreat, Rest, Meditation, Confession, Contemplative Prayer, Worship, Silence, and Journaling. The research method included pre-test survey, post-test survey and deferred post-test survey, administered before and after the selected group walked through the manual. The preacher needs to analyze the ministerial context and invite the congregation to share their concerns, interests and questions about preaching. It suggests that the preacher should withdraw his/her controlling power over the congregation so that the laity can work together with the preacher by sharing the ministry, including preaching. The author trained five leaders in his congregation to include God in the conversation of regular meetings by using a specific ministry team worship practice rooted in the corporate worship act of commissioning. This project was designed to equip, enable, and empower the laity to be participants in the worship experience that would enhance outreach in the local church. The project was designed around actions that were translated into acts of worship: equipping and encouraging greeters, sharing a life story or personal testimony, dramatic presentations on a youth Sunday and during the celebration of the first Sunday of Advent and Thanksgiving. Traditional didactic classroom instruction is not always sufficient, because it does not provide an opportunity for elders to apply what they have learned. To compensate for this lack of experiential learning, role-play was incorporated into elder training in a particular congregation, resulting in the conclusion that role-play is a useful training tool in certain situations. This paper describes that project and the participatory action research that guided
