Research was compiled from various contexts of churches and ministries. The transmission of this information was in the form of a workshop to a specific enlisted group of church leaders to equip them with models of adult discipleship they can employ in their ministry context. Twelve church leaders participated in the seminar. Eighteen (18) participants completes a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire that produced inconclusive results. An additional inquiry revealed the following. The men will not come forward to lead. There is lack of training. Some believe that the women control everything. The members are afraid of responsibility and criticism. Some believe that no problem exists. This study utilized a qualitative research design, in which seven pastors were interviewed based on a semi-structured interview format. The literature review and analysis of the seven interviews revealed that developing spiritual shepherds is a long-term process of helping people discern God's calling to this role, and helping them develop the competencies and character required. The project involved researching existing assimilation strategies through readings, church surveys, and interviews; developing an assimilation strategy based on research conclusions; and presenting the strategy to the church members. The project director recruited church members to review materials, evaluate results, and consider the advice of assimilation experts. The proposed assimilation strategy was influenced by models designed by other church leaders. CROSSROADS at Moravian Theological Seminary focuses on lay leadership development through theological education, teaching practical ministry skills, mentoring lay people to articulate call, and developing spiritual formation. As a result the congregation's ministries have not been aligned with any explicit overarching vision. Ministries were sometimes not sure how their particular activities aligned with the larger purposes of the church. A process was needed to bring the congregation's leadership together to start thinking strategically and plan the future ministries of the church around a shared vision. A strategic planning team led the process by conducting congregational surveys, meeting regularly to pray, studying survey results and writing new mission and vision statements. The outcomes of this project include new mission and vision statements, a willingness to align the ministries accordingly, and a more forward looking, visionary leadership. Drawing from the U.S.C.C.B. document Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord, the author has created a program of spiritual formation for parish lay volunteers.
