Instead of focusing upon futile efforts to re-capture a family structured church, the congregation were directed toward discovering opportunities for ministries to their own unique environment.  Ministries were developed for older single apartment residents, single young adults, and a utilization of facilities for 3 separate ethnic congregations.  The thesis describes how the church using the 'servanthood' model can renew its vigor and theological reality in a changing neighborhood. Questionnaires were filled out by 59 pastors and 623 lay persons in attendance at charge conferences on the Baltimore Southwest District of the Baltimore Conference of the United Methodist Church.  Respondents were given an opportunity to indicate their expectations of a church 'in mission' and to evaluate the performance level of their congregations.  The total life of the church was covered: spiritual growth, evangelistic thrust, care for individuals, outreach and service, stewardship, recruitment and training of workers, goal setting and the functioning of the Council on Ministries. Participants were given an opportunity to visit patient wards and to reflect upon their experience through the peer group process.  Participants were to read three books during the three months. It also served to test the new form of organization for smaller United Methodist churches which place emphasis on group responsibility and accountability over that of hierarchical leadership. The training, which is described, occurred in nine sessions focusing on leadership skills and roles.  It was evaluated using the Style of Leadership Survey of Teleometrics, International, along with several other methods. This project to the physically ill is designed so that the materials and actual care contribute to spiritual and personal growth for those who visit and are visited. Effective visitation procedures are expected. This action-reflection project with 19 members of St Paul's United Church was designed to animate lay people within a supportive environment to explore an opportunity for ministry.  Utilizing the Structuralist method of biblical interpretation, T H Groome's praxis method of theological reflection, and papers and exercises on the history and faith of the church, participants explored and wrote personal statements of faith concerning their ministry.  They then identified their gifts and analyzed them according to skills, which were then categorized by priority.  The third section explored personal mission through study papers and a pairing exercise to identify the specific context and meaning of ministry.
