The researcher uses a model of ministry to lead Lutheran leaders in rostered ministries through a twenty-five hour Sabbath retreat using ample free time, an intentionally home-like setting, a wide variety of practices, and methods of feedback to improve this model for future users. With the population decline and aging of the Upper Midwest, many congregations are no longer able to support full-time ordained pastors. Congregations of several denominations have pressed into service licensed local pastors, and other lay persons to preach. United Methodist preachers serving in rural parishes in Iowa were coached in various aspects of preaching. There were three main steps in reaching this goal: the exegesis of biblical principles to find the model of Jesus' incarnational ministry, the exegesis of the Thai Buddhist context, and the development of a Thai contextualized model for building an effective ministry. The findings from field studies supported the library research about the belief system of the Thai Buddhist students and their value orientations. Four small groups produced a custom-made lectionary, collected related reference materials, and provided the pastor with weekly exegetical and presentation ideas, supporting materials, and feedback on proposed sermons. The pastor's increase in satisfaction and reduction in frustration with the overall sermon preparation process indicated positive change.
