To gain an understanding of substance dependence treatment and how this issue has become widespread, the project director researched and provided current statistics on substance dependence. Educational and substance abuse professionals were enlisted to review materials utilized in the development of the workshop. The project director also utilized scripture to validate and support the treatment approach. The project director assisted Christian lay counselors in conceptualizing the nature and character of substance dependence. The project director enabled Christian lay counselors to provide substance dependence treatment by combining a faith-based and twelve-step model. The eight-week study sought to empower students with an understanding of what being a disciple means and having an ability to implement the practices of disciples. At the conclusion of the workshop, students were equipped to begin meeting with two or three students, training them to be disciple-making disciples. The need for this training was significant due to an apparent void of university students who are disciple-making disciples. Although each of these multiethnic churches have come to the same conclusion regarding the importance of being united and inclusive based on their biblical understanding of the New Testament, they have important differences in their strategies. Upon closer examination of each of these representative multiethnic churches, one finds variations because of differing motivations for doing multiethnic ministry. This study focuses on examining these variations. Western culture's bias toward objectivity casts aspersion on the subjective evidences of a pastor's call. The author used a qualitative research method for gathering data. Personal interviews from pastors faced with this dilemma, plus questionnaires and interviews from his family, churches and communities, where he pastored with his disabled wife, played a significant role in his research. As well, an archival research into the effects and challenges facing caregivers and their families added to his insights. The problem addressed the tendency of people to observe rather than to participate in ministry due to their lack of knowledge and understanding of spiritual gifts. It developed an equipping ministry launch that consisted of a twelve-week study of spiritual gifts using a preaching series, Sunday school lessons and small-group studies. The launch helped attendees gain knowledge and understanding of spiritual gifts and of their use in ministry. The team approach within the caring community seems to fit this need. The 'team' will be an interdisciplinary team whose goal is to provide a more effective pastoral care. As an ordained clergy in the United Methodist Church, one of my biggest frustrations has always been that the 'job' is bigger than one individual can successfully accomplish. The old adage 'two heads are better than one' rings true to me for Christian ministry. Through the years, many have felt that the laity understands pastoral care as the sole duty of the paid clergy. The scriptures clearly show that Jesus did not understand ministry as an individual endeavor, but as a team approach as he sent his disciples out to minister in pairs. Also, Jesus said, 'When two or more are gathered in my name, I am in the midst of them.' This is an expression of community gathering in Christ's name and ministering not alone, but with Christ in their midst.
