During a six-month period, twenty-four lay leaders utilized Participatory Action Research by engaging in cycles of planning, action, and reflection. Findings from the project included characteristics of effective leadership, leadership expectations, and the importance of resolute action to achieve initiatives for revitalization. Twelve people from Mission Village Baptist Church were trained for one month in the subjects of evangelism, missions, and the culture and customs of Tijuana, Mexico. Then, five people spent two months making four evangelistic mission trips to Tijuana, Mexico, implementing the training they had received. The methods used in this project entailed designing an equipping and training model of evangelism to reach the non-Christians in Tijuana, Mexico. They also received a resource manual and experienced structured devotional exercises.  Participants reported an enhanced sense of preparedness for service following the learning experience. Despite remarkable numerical growth of the Brazillian evangelical church over the past twenty years, it continues to weather a sever integrity crisis. Directive Mentoring fuses the relational strength of mentoring with the learning strength of discipleship to form Christian character through encouragement, accountability and biblical praxis. Six strategic lay-leaders participated in the documented, three month pilot project. The methodology included a survey, preaching and teaching about hospitality, group participant journals and field notes. The findings revealed an increased understanding of the importance and complexity of the practice of hospitality in the church. The project director developed a training curriculum. He enlisted recruitment team members, know as 'connection coaches,' for six training sessions. The connection coaches learned about spiritual gifts, personality temperments, natural abilities, and best practices for helping members become involved in ministry. After the training, connection coaches accepted an assignment to contact a specific new member. He or she facilitated that new member's enlistment into a ministry position. Objective evaluators in the fields of curriculum development and lay ministry recruitment evaluated the project director's growth. This should be a time of great hope as it can assess its place in the Kingdom of God and plan for its role in the future.  Currently the functional ministries of the church are in question as to their effectiveness both within the local body and in their impact on the local community. This practicum/project is centered on the church as a manifestation of the Kingdom of God. As part of the Kingdom, the ecclesia can be evaluated and effectively measured as to its functional ministries.  In this project, the following steps were taken. The methodology employed provided ways of measuring the church biblically, theologically, practically, and in terms of its spiritual vitality. The chief finding was the need to break out of old patterns and practices of ministry. This thesis will illustrate the process First Presbyterian Church of Burlington went through in order to shift the deacons' role from one of historical stewardship/maintenance leadership to one of pastoral care. Members of the church were led through a discernment process in order to identify and utilize these spiritual gifts. Prayer and preaching were the foundation for both the preacher and the laity throughout the change process.
