This overburdens the pastor, withholds the privilege of serving from lay people, and inhibits the spiritual growth of the body. The purpose of this project is to equip lay people for ministry at Valley Chapel Free Methodist Church. The research will measure the effectiveness of the 'Equipping Church Model' from The Equipping Church Guidebook, by Sue Mallory and Brad Smith.  The effectiveness of the 'Equipping Church Model' was evaluated by using a researcher-designed survey that measured the congregation's understanding and experience of nine outcomes of the model. The research is an evaluation study in the experimental mode utilizing a pre-. mid-, and post-test design with no comparison group.  Significant change was observed in all nine outcomes from pre- to mid- and post-tests. The purpose for creating a manual which utilizes lay people in starting a church are found to be: biblical and cultural mandates for such a ministry, lay peoples vital roll in expanding God's kingdom, and literature inappropriate for the lay person in church planting. Chapter 3 also examines contemporary expository preachers. Chapter 4 outlines the project itself, and Chapter 5 gives a written analysis of the project's impact upon the focus group and the author's personal reflections. There is a tremendous need for the church to care for its members and reach out with the love of Christ.  Small groups play a strategic role in faciliating life transformation and care for those in need.  At Parkview Church in Iowa City, IA, located next to the University of Iowa, I provided a ten-week class designed to equip experienced small group leaders for caring ministries.  As a leader and facilitator, I envisioned and equipped small group leaders to care for those working through loneliness, depression, worry, cancer, divorce, grief and loss, and hospitalization.  The results of this class were noteworthy. The hypothesis was that through the design of a new, required course, focused on serving as a 'rite of passage' into seminary, new students could have a more hospitable experience of making the transition into the seminary community. The model used was an education model focused on hospitality as a theological practice.
