However, it soon became apparent that all the adults (men and women alike) would benefit from the implementation of a simple, concrete spiritual growth model. This led to the development of the five core values of the Stillmeadow Church of the Nazarene: devotions, public worship, discipleship, service and witness.  The development and implementation of this particular project was based upon scripture, informed by the Wesleyan-Holiness faith tradition and in response to the needs of 21st-century persons. I instituted a ministry of hospitality at the Hosanna Methodist Church designed to assimilate newcomers. The project consisted in the preparation of the congregation through a series of sermons and the training and commissioning of eight volunteers to share in the work of the clergy.  The paper also looked at how the social supports of the past were being eroded as the society became more developed. The author will lead the group in discovering important biblical truths, as well as certain characteristics of servanthood.  The group will then be encouraged to nurture the church and community by developing a committee known as SON (Serving Our Neighborhood).  The author accepted the call of pastor on January 10, 1999.  The congregation at First Baptist is composed mainly of retired people who have moved to the Broaddus area due to its proximity to Lake Sam Rayburn.  The people of First Baptist appear uncertain of their calling and specific ministry for the community. It is the aim of this project to offer a focus and an opportunity for the church members to realize their potential as servants and to discover their unique calling from God. The church will then transmit that calling into a ministry suited for the community. This qualitative case study of thirty-three participants revealed that the primary reason for their active membership was rooted in relationships and participation in small groups including lay ministries.  A second reason was their commitment to lay ministry.  The third reason emerged from religious consumerism and opportunities for faith development. During the seventeen years of pastoral ministry in India, my experiences reveal that lay people have potential to do effective ministry both inside and outside churches.  They are looking for ways, opportunities and guidance from pastoral leadership.  The purpose of this research was to evaluate a ten-week self-designed and self-directed study program, designed to equip laity for effective ministry in evangelism.  Thirty lay men and women were chosen from a local Methodist church in South India to study the lessons.  Their affective, cognitive and behavioral changes were assessed by using pretest, mid-test and posttest questionnaires.
