Using a phenomenological approach and practical theological method, the author provided six in-depth case studies of women who had completed CPE supervisory training.  The author concluded that shame, sexuality and speech act as hinges on a door; i.e., they can act to either shut out or open up the way towards collegiality in ministry. Much of this fear seems to arise from a feeling by lay members that they are inadequate to teach what they and the church believe.  This paper explores this situation, and tries to provide some answers to empower these reluctant potential teachers.  It also presents a program for training laity in the context, purpose and content of Christian religious education.  The processes of emotional, cognitive, moral and faith development in individuals are explored.  Several teaching and learning strategies are presented to enhance the effectiveness of teachers in a congregational setting.  The importance of continuing teacher training events is emphasized. The specific focus is the 'crying needs of children.'  In worship services, charge conferences, cluster meetings and newsletters, the superintendent shared timely information and challenged the district to address the suffering of children.  She also collaborated with the DCOM and district program coordinator to initiate at the annual district gathering a project to involve local churches, both adults and children. Chapter 1 analyzes the problem and offers reasons for how it arose.  Chapter 2 surveys 'lost treasures' of Reformed spirituality with a special reference to Calvin's Institutes and the Book of Confessions.  The project envisions clergy gathering together in small groups for the purpose educating of themselves about the spiritual life through book discussion and for supporting one another through prayer. The project's uniqueness is its decade-long longitudinal perspective on the ministry developed.  The project was undertaken among fourteen members in a two-church Episcopal parish in northeastern Pennsylvania.  Results indicated that this ministry, as developed, has a central and identifying character in the parish and surrounding community.
