The primary strategy for accomplishing the project's purpose was to develop a structure for equipping leaders to conduct and expand small home Bible study groups at Emmanuel Baptist Church.  Once the new groups were launched, the author supervised or coached the group leaders and co-leaders as they led three home Bible study groups.  This strategy has provided the structure by which these Bible studies will have a multiplying effect throughout the congregation as new groups are formed. The knowledge of the church's needs, theological foundations and theoretical presuppositions all pointed to the needs that the project addressed.  The participants showed an increased awareness of needs and knowledge gained and, as a result, have come across ministry situations that have been better handled as a result of this project. The project became an instrument of planned programming to prepare participants to minister more effectively and knowledgeably. The project also served as a useful resource for the demographics of the church field. The author recognized the major source of the problem: the use of a secular model of decision making. This project tests the premise that an exploration of this tradition will enable laity to witness to their faith.  A small study group of African-American Christians followed a curriculum based on Thomas R Groome's shared praxis model of Christian education, involving interaction with and response to Christian witness.  The study allowed participants to: examine the content of the church's evangelistic witness; explore the experiences of slavery and freedom which have shaped the way African Americans relate the Christian story; and identify prospective means of evangelism in which laity could become active. A literature review shows the laity's basic role in mission at the beginning of the twentieth century was to provide resources for church expansion.  During the twentieth century social and political crises forced the Episcopal Church to include social service in its mission understanding.  The 1979 Prayer Book provides a clear statement for lay mission.  In the project a clergy-lay team produced a study guide of the baptismal service for adult use.  The study guide questions engage the participant in theological reflection about personal mission. Films that were pastoral in theme were the primary focus of this research.  A document was completed which addressed the theological and practical considerations of utilizng media in church educational programs, as well as the impact of media upon US culture and churches.  The project then addressed the pastoral role the author fulfills within the Churches of Christ while functioning as a hospital chaplain.  The development of a 39-minute video directed towards enhancing laity's Christian response to the seriously ill was the final aspect of the project.  Resources were utilized to help focus upon script writing, patient interviews, and securing visual supplemental materials. After these components were completed, the editing process began, blending all of these components plus utilizing decision-making skills of the author's hospital experiences and the resource persons' editing expertise. Fifteen persons, 65 years of age or older, were enlisted in an eleven-week training session designed to equip them for ministry projects of their choosing, to undergird them in ministering through the selected ministry projects, and to guide them in evaluating the projects they selected. The project addresses one obstacle to effective church ministry as it relates to the small membership church: the small church mentality.  The small church mentality shows itself in four characteristics: fear of outsiders; resistance to change; lack of cohesive, coherent organization; and lack of unified forward movement. To move toward effective ministry requires the small church to diagnose the presence and effects of the small church mentality and its mindset.
