Lay care-givers (elders and deacons) attended a two-day workshop in which they were presented with a brief history and explanation of pastoral care and spirituality, and introduced to the concept of 'spiritually centered pastoral care' or spiritual direction by lay care-givers. This project explains problems associated with that process.  The procedure examines Paul's 'diversity in unity' principle concerning spiritual gifts; the principle in Ephesians 4:11-13 as the proper mobilization model; and the dynamics that evolve within the local church. This project describes the process used to compile a handbook for local church pastors with specific focus on white 'Old Yankee' Protestant women over the age of seventy-five. Recent insights into women's psychological and moral development have uncovered the reality of women's different voice.  This thesis has engaged a dialogue among the theoretical constructs of feminist and biblical theology, women's developmental theory, and women engaged in parish ministry.  Through a qualitative approach female rectors have named their experience.  A distinctiveness was noted between women's consciousness and feminist consciousness. Chapter 3 analyzed the actual implementation of the project.  The fourth chapter served as an evaluation of the entire project. While previous generations took religious affiliation for granted, the postwar generation shows significant differences with the preceding generations.  This fact became obvious when the postwar generation involvement with the church declined during their adolescence and early adulthood.  For this and other reasons, the postwar generation poses unique problems which an orientation must address. The study involved use of a two group pretest/posttest to test for knowledge gain as well as three spiritual gift inventories.  Attitude change was measured by use of a semantic differential constructed for this project.  A focused interview was also conducted with small group participants.  The result of the project showed some significant change in attitude toward ministry involvement in those who understood themselves as gifted for ministry.
