Theological reflection analyzes ministry in a secular society and is illustrated by pen pictures and case studies. After a review of biblical, theological, and psychological literature, the lay board members of six selected churches were surveyed for demographic information, opinions regarding volunteerism, and theological beliefs. The pastors of those six churches were personally interviewed regarding the same items. The study concentrates on finding the basic needs of families by way of a community survey.  The findings of the survey resulted in the development of several possible responses a local church can make in meeting the needs of families. To reach out effectively it was discovered that people within the church needed to be equipped to do the work of ministry. This project attempts to provide some of that training through advanced Sonlife program that builds upon the basic seminar and helps youth pastors develop additional skills in effective church-related youth work. Systems theory and biblical theology are integrated to provide a more effective leading of the church in its ministry.  The model is made up of six units. They are called the proclamation unit, the valuing unit, the symbolizing unit, the learning/growth unit, the sustaining unit, and the reparative unit. The study featured a historical sketch, recent controversy, CC-CC views, various opportunities in ministry found in the army chaplaincy.  A conclusion was followed by an appendix which surveyed 1,000 Protestant army chaplains reference their attitude toward the army chaplaincy.  The survey indicated that chaplains minister to families almost as much as their civilian counterparts.
