In order to determine why church members volunteer and how they feel about it, a questionnaire was developed and sent out, follow-up interviews conducted, and tentative conclusions reached.  Suggested guidelines and procedures were drawn up and tested.  The results of that testing are reported. A theological understanding of life, death and ministry was developed from biblical and secular sources.  Divided into six sessions, the educational experience utilized group discussion, audio-visual presentations, simulations, and visitation. Templer's 'Death Anxiety Scale' and subjective self-reporting were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the educational experience. Two instruments were used in a retreat setting.  The instruments determined styles of leadership, defined ministry, discussed who performs the ministry, and to whom. The results provided opportunity for evaluation and setting of goals.  The most effective and dynamic churches were those that shared responsibility and power between clergy and laity.
